  1. MARC 21 Changes for RDA • presented at “From Rules to Entities” • a CLA preconference sponsored by • the Technical Services Interest Group • Laura May and Bill Leonard • Standards, Library and Archives Canada • CLA, May 29, 2009

  2. Outline • RDA – MARC Working Group (RMWG) • Changes considered by RMWG for proposal to MARBI • Where are we now? • What comes next?

  3. RDA in MARC 21 Now • RDA implementation scenario 2 • Linked bibliographic and authority records Future • RDA implementation scenario 1 • Relational or object-oriented database

  4. RDA/MARC Working Group (RMWG) • JSC, MARBI, the national libraries, vendors, utilities and specialist communities • collaborate on the development of proposals for changes to the MARC 21 formats to accommodate the encoding of RDA data

  5. RMWG (cont’d) • Starting from the first MARBI discussion paper on RDA, 2008-DP04, January 2008 • Discussion papers and proposals at all subsequent MARBI meetings • More to come!

  6. Observations • Not all elements mapped cleanly, for example: • 245 $b • 300 $b • 500 $a

  7. 245 Title statement $a Title $b Remainder of title $c Statement of responsibility, etc. $f Inclusive dates $g Bulk dates $h Medium $k Form $n Number of part/section of a work $p Name of part/section of a work $s Version 2.3.2 Title proper 2.3.3 Parallel title 2.3.4 Other title information 2.3.5 Parallel other title information 2.4.2 Statement of responsibility relating to title N/A N/A N/A N/A 2.3.2 Title proper 2.3.2 Title proper N/A Mapping MARC to RDA Elements

  10. Observations • Not all relationship designators are coded in MARC in the same way, e.g. relationship designators found in Appendices I, J, K • MARC coded values for Format of Music MU 008/20 has more granularity than RDA • FRAD introduced several new elements to the authority format

  11. Where are we now? • Many changes were approved at MARBI in January 2009 and will be listed on the online version of MARC soon • A few more will be discussed at MARBI in July 2009 • More subfields for 033 and 518 • Encoding URIs to link to registries of controlled values • MARC 21 update no. 10 will be officially published later this year

  12. Where will we be later this year • We can start using the new data elements 90 days for testing and experimentation only after MARC 21 update no. 10 is published, if our systems permit! • The Library of Congress considers the online version to be the official version of MARC 21 so the clock starts ticking when the changes are officially released on the MARC web site.

  13. Testing the new MARC 21 elements • After the new MARC 21 data elements are available on our systems, we can start creating RDA records • Communities of practice • Experimentation • Record creation process/workflows • Display • Compatibility of data derived from a digital source (RDA 1.7)

  14. Outside the scope of RMWG • Record displays will need to change to accommodate new elements and FRBR relationships • Interesting projects: • eXtensible Catalog Project at University of Rochester • FRBR Project at Kent State University School of Library and Information Science • Look to your system vendor
