  2. Mission- The Dual Credit program provides a collegiate experience and pathway for exceptional high school students who are college bound and who meet eligibility requirements to successfully bridge from high school to college. Mission

College level courses that also meet high school requirements • With a passing grade, the student can receive college credit and meet high school course requirements at the same time • Courses can be taken at any NCTC campus, online or on the high school campus • Core or “basic” college transferable classes • NCTC has been participating in dual credit with area high school’s since the early 1990’s What is Dual Credit?

High school students gain insight into the college level learning environment • Smoother transition into college • Convenience- Courses are taught at the high school campus, at an NCTC campus, or online. • Low Cost- Dual credit courses cost less than regular college courses. • Meets requirements of the Distinguished Achievement High School graduation program in most school districts. • Dual Credit courses are fully transferable to public colleges and universities in Texas Benefits of Dual Credit

College course in all respects • Expected to attend class • Time- invest at least as much time out of class as in class • Schedule- dual credit, high school courses, extra curricular activities • Different grading structure • Grades in correlating high school subjects • Online courses- different delivery method & are not for everyone What can students expect?

Parents should be aware of FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) • NCTC can release the students grades to the high school, parents and/or legal guardian. • Parents should be supportive of their student by making them aware that their success in this program depends on the student taking responsibility for their education and behavior. • Students will have access to their grades through out the semester either through Angel or from their professor. Students are encouraged to share this information with their parents. If parents feel it necessary to discuss anything with the professor, the student must sign a release form. The NCTC instructor will have this form. What can parents expect?

Students must meet all NCTC requirements • A/B high school average on Recommended or Distinguished high school curriculum • TSI Exempt • Junior or Senior in high school and must exhibit maturity and social behavior necessary to be enrolled in a college level course • Maintain a C or higher in each dual credit course • Desire to get a head start on their college curriculum Who is eligible?

Step One- apply to NCTC through Apply Texas (follow dual credit instruction/guidelines) • Residency information • Once the application has been submitted it becomes an official document, therefore NCTC may require additional documentation in order to make any changes to a students file. Application Process

Students must submit an official high school transcript during the application process. • Submit test scores- TAKS, THEA, SAT or ACT scores • If using TAKS scores for TSI exemption, students must submit a copy of the official full TAKS score report • Proof of Meningitis shot Transcripts and Test Scores

Appropriate test scores on official report or HS transcript- One of the following: • THEA/Q-THEA- Math-270, English-220 & Reading-230 • COMPASS- Math(Algebra)-60,English -59 & 5 Essay, Reading-81 • TAKS- Math- 2200, English/Language Arts- 2200 & sub score 3 • SAT- 1070 Combined score (math & critical reading) and 500 in Math and 500 in Critical Reading • ACT- 23 Composite and 19 in Math and 19 in verbal • PSAT/NMSQT- combined score of 107 (critical reading and math) with a score of 50 on the subject relevant to the course to be taken. • PLAN (a pre-ACT test) - composite score of 23 with a 19 or higher in mathematics or English depends on course student plans on taking. *NCTC does not accept the Accuplacer for admission into Dual Credit TSI Testing information

THEA: • Texas Higher Education Assessment • Three sections- Reading, Writing and Math • NCTC offers the Quick THEA numerous times throughout the year • Written (scantron and pencil) test, scores are mailed off and typically available within 10-15 days of test date $39 fee for both Compass: • Computerized version of the THEA • Computer format (cannot change answer after submitted, etc) • Typically offered during regular registration periods • Scores are available immediately after testing is complete THEA/COMPASS

  12. Step Two- Enrollment • Dual credit students must enroll for classes once they complete the application process • Submit the signed Dual Credit Agreement Form to the NCTC Admissions Office. Form must be completed and signed by high school, student, and parent. • All dual credit students must be enrolled by the dual credit priority registration deadline. Enrollment

  13. Step Three- Payment • Payment is due at the time of registration • Tuition is based on residency • Students must notify NCTC before the semester begins if they are not taking dual credit. If a student drops or withdraws after the “census or date of record” they are still liable for enrollment any tuition owed • Students are responsible for purchasing textbooks • Scholarships are available Payment

Other Colleges & Universities Estimated Tuition and Fees for a 3 hours course at: UNT- $839.00 Texas Tech- $760.00 Texas A&M- $841.00 UT Austin- $ 1000.00 (average) TCU-$3240.00 OU- $1560.00 (out of state) NCTC Dual Credit Tuition • 2012-2013- Estimated Cost for In-District Students- $72 per credit hour • $216- 1 class (3 credit hours) • $432- 2 classes (6 credit hours • Students who qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch= FREE TUITION Tuition & Fees

Scholarships are available for Dual Credit students • NCTC Foundation Scholarship • Fall- Deadline is April 15th • Spring- Deadline is October 15th • Applications available through NCTC Foundation Office- 940-668-4213 or online at www.nctc.edu, click on Scholarships on the left-hand side of the page, scroll down to Dual Credit Scholarships

Consider all the data and information to make sure dual credit is a good fit for you • Complete and submit application through Applytexas.org (Print application confirmation) • Submit high school transcript and test scores to NCTC • Submit Signed Dual Credit Agreement/Registration Form by August 3rd for the Fall 2012 semester to NCTC. Priority registration begins 4/16 • Returning students only need to submit the Agreement/Registration Form What next?
