Transforming Wellington Zoo: A Case Study in Sustainability and Environmental Management

Wellington Zoo, established in 1906, is New Zealand's first zoo, attracting 185,000 visitors annually. The Zoo is undergoing a $20.8 million redevelopment over a decade, focusing on sustainable practices. With 50% of Wellingtonians visiting each year, the Zoo initiated an environmental management strategy six years ago, leading to significant waste reduction and water savings. The establishment of a Green Team and innovative solutions such as water-limiting valves and waste separation have resulted in a 97% reduction in landfill waste. The Zoo continues to evolve towards sustainability with ambitious goals, including exploring carbon neutrality.
