What is the data protection act? • The data protection act (1998) is , a legalisation that protects personal data , for example: facts about a living individual , where you live , who you are , where you're from , contact details etc. • It protects peoples details that give their personal data to an organisation , this means the data is kept confidential and is only between the organisation and the person. • Data has always been stored by organisations but since the wide-spread of computer use in the late 90s ( to store data) , the data protection act 1998 was introduced. • What is it about and why was it introduced? • The DPA was introduced to give people legal rights about information stored about them. About the 1998 DPA… The 1998 Act stores information or data - stored on a computer or a (organised) paper filing system, about living people.It established the role of the Information Commissioner. An information commissioner is a person who is in charge with making sure that companies obey by the laws of the Act. All organisations that store personal data must be registered by the Information Commissioner and follow the laws within the act. By Sabina Wogu 10QPL 8/02/2012

Terminology and Key-Terms • Here are some key terms that are relevant to the data protection act. • Personal data – facts about the living individual. • Data – information about the individual e.g. phone numbers , home address , school/employment , DOB (date of birth) , NI (national insurance number) this can be kept on paper or a computer. • Processing- processing of personal record (e.g. research , removing data from a system , comparing data records). • Data controller- the person/organisation that store person information. • Data subject- the living individual on who the data is stored about. • Information commissioner- the official who supervises the enforcement of the data protection act. • By Sabina Wogu 10QPL 8/02/2012
