Analyzing Imagery and Themes in Beowulf's Battle with Grendel's Mother

In this lesson prepared by Mr. Houghteling, we explore "The Battle with Grendel's Mother" from Beowulf. Students will complete their responses to "Women at War," followed by imagery practice focused on understanding thermal, kinetic, kinesthetic, synesthetic, visual, auditory, gustatory, olfactory, and tactile imagery. The class will analyze key poetic elements such as kennings, alliteration, and the contrast between pagan themes and Christian influences in the poem. Homework includes completing the imagery handout and studying guide questions on this epic battle.
