  3. Description • What do you see? Describe the work of art. Note the size, the medium used, and the subject matter. Make a complete and detailed description of the elements (line, value, color, shape, form, space, and texture) seen in a work.

  4. Analysis • How is the work organized? Accurately describe several dominant elements (line, value, color, shape, form, space, and texture) and/or principles (rhythm, movement, balance, proportion, variety, emphasis, and unity) used by the artist. Relate how they are used by the artist to reinforce the theme, meaning, mood, or feeling of the artwork.

  5. Interpretation by (your name) • What is the artist saying? Form a reasonable hypothesis about the symbolic or metaphorical meaning . Support this with evidence from the work. (write what you believe the meaning or purpose of the artwork is and back-up you thoughts with evidence or examples from the artwork)

  6. Evaluation • Is this a successful work of art? Use multiple criteria (such as composition, expression, creativity, design, communication of ideas) to judge the artwork. You can include your personal opinion if you include reasons based on artistic merit. Don’t claim a work of art is not successful b/c it contains blue cats and you hate blue cats.
