  1. What is POV? Why is point of view important in history? • Helps us empathize and understand: puts us in the place of someone who was there • Primary source documents are NOT FACTS. They are opinions and reflections of the way a person saw the world. • Helps us understand differing opinions on certain events.

  2. Point of view: we all have one…..How might these different people have different points of view be on the BACK TO SCHOOL DANCE • A 9th grader • A 10th grader • A 12th grader • Ms. Greenberg (chaperone)

  3. Authorial Point of View - definition • Authorial POV: Students show how the occupation, gender, class, religion, nationality, political position, ethnicity, etc. influence the author’s POV • You can have clues to POV even if you are not totally familiar with the topic they are discussing.

  4. Example: Ms. Greenberg, Social Studies teacher, early 30s, is a swimmer, enjoys knitting and watching movies -specifically romantic comedies from France and bank robbery movies from the United States and Latin America How does the following review reflect Ms. Greenberg’s authorial POV?

  5. Ms Greenberg’s review of The Town the 2010 film with Ben Affleck “This was one of the best movies of the year. When they broke into the armored car in nun outfits to steal the bank’s money, I was on the edge of my seat. EVERYONE should see this movie.” Write one sentence connecting Ms. Greenberg’s “authorial point of view” to the document.

  6. Where would YOUR “authorial point of view” come from? • Your age • Where you live • Your family background • Your hobbies and interests (3) • Your passions – what you really care about (2)

  7. What is your point of view on the following? Relate your point of view back to who you are. (Choose two to write about) as if you were writing this in a DBQ – Use the 3rd person • Global Warming • Organic salad bar at RHS • The homecoming dance • Bicycle races

  8. In groups • Read the historical background about the 1524 peasant war in the HRE • Put documents in groups based on their POV toward the peasant revolt. • Each person choose ONE document in each group and explain the authorial point of view: given who this person is, why would they feel this way?

  9. Revolt of the Swabian Peasants – document study • Separate into piles with common points of view • Separate into piles based on WHO the author is • Write a POV statement for one document per group.
