  1. Non-renewable and Renewable resources

  2. What are natural resources? • Sources of energy and raw materials that occur naturally and are not made by humans

  3. HMMMM.... What do you think nonrenewable resources are? Break it down... Nonrenewable? Resource?

  4. NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.

  5. NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Once the uranium is used, it is gone! http://app.discoveryeducation.com/search?Ntt=nuclear+energy

  6. Chernobyl Power Plant in Ukraine- 1986 • Not safe for life for another 20,000 years

  7. COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

  8. Fossil Fuels • Formed from remains of prehistoric plants and animals • Burning coal produces more carbon dioxide than burning oil or gas; it also produces sulfur dioxide, a gas that contributes to acid rain. • Oil and gasoline are liquid and can flow through pipes; it is inexpensive and simple to transport after pipes are built

  9. Fossil Fuels • Carbon Dioxide released into the air contributes to the Greenhouse effect which contributes to Global Warming • Global warmingThe warming of the Earth’s climate due to the buildup of heat from the greenhouse effect • Greenhouse effect The trapping of heat from the sun by Earth’s atmosphere.

  10. HOW IS COAL MADE ???

  11. What do we use coal for? • Electricity generation and steel production

  12. HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

  13. Oil Rig The Hibernia Platform off the coast of Newfoundland

  14. WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COAL AND OIL/GAS?

  15. HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?

  16. RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water

  17. SOLAR Energy from the sun. • Photoelectric cells -solar energy can be converted to electricity • Most successful in locations that receive a consistent amount of sun(Southern California and Australia) IF there are clouds, the heating properties of the sun don’t work. solar power

  18. GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat. Problem to access the Earth’s hot center geothermal heat pump

  19. WIND Energy from the wind. Wind Turbine

  20. BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter. Examples: Wood , crops and garbage Biofuels

  21. WATER or HYDROELECTRIC Energy from the flow of water. Why is energy of flowing water renewable? Hydropower

  22. SUMMARY What are the differences between nonrenewable and renewable resources?
