The home minister also said that over the past few decades, over 4,000 people lost their lives in the violence perpetrated by the Bodo militants. The NDFB was re- sponsible for a series of violent acts in the past few decades, in- cluding the massacre of nearly 70 Adivasis in December 2014. As per the accord, the BTC strengthened more powers and its seats will be expand- ed from 40 to 60. A commission will be set up for inclusion of Bodo-dominated vil- lages in the BTC and exclusion of those where Bodos are not in majority. This was the third Bodo accord to be signed in 27 years. The first accord was signed with the All Bodo Students Un- ion in 1993, leading to the creation of a Bodoland mous Council with limited political pow- ers. In 2003, the second ac- cord was signed with the militant group Bodo Liberation Tigers, lead- ing to formation of a BTC with four districts of Assam -- Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baska and Udalguri -- called Bodo- land Territorial Area District (BTAD). The chief minister said a comprehensive rehabilitation would be formulated for providing employment opportunities to the surrendered militants so that they could make meaningful contribu- tion to the process of nation-building. Thanking the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their initiative to bring permanent Ranjan Daimary fac- tion and 200 of the NDFB(S) led by B Sao- raigwra -- into the mainstream, Sonowal said he was confident that the initiative will inspire others, who were yet to give up arms, to come togeth- er and work for the “Team Assam”. On Wednesday, there was chaos at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Board meeting after BJP leaders protested over Congress MLA Imran Khedawala’s visit to Shaheen Bagh, the ven- ue of an ongoing sit-in protest by anti-CAA (Citizenship ment Act) activists. Re- acting to allegations made against Khedawala on Thursday issued legal notice to for- mer Mayor and BJP Leader Amit Shah. The Enforcement Di- rectorate has also been ordered to file a com- plaint through Crime. However, even after his retirement two months back, JN Singh continues to hold the chairmanship of Gujarat Gas Limited, a GSPC-owned company. The babudom is agog with rumours that the Rupani Government is likely to continue Singh as the Gujarat Gas company Chairman until some post- retirement “key assignment” is given to him. Until he relinquished the top offi ce in the Sachivalaya on November 30, 1983-batch IAS Singh held the chairmanship of GSPC, GSFC, GNFC, GACL and GMB, besides being the Managing Director of GSPL. ‘ONLY MINISTERS CAN TAKE CREDIT’ W fl atly refuse to share information or avoid meeting you at all. But, now they’re saying things like, “We are labourers, we are not supposed to make any announcement or take credit for the work we do. Those rights lie only with ministers.” This sudden and extreme humility sounds like an awesome way to avoid engaging with “outsiders”, right? But it might not be, once you hear the rest of it: “Whether they work or not, only they can make announcements and take credit for others’ work.” And this is not an isolated case or two. Are elected representatives really running the government now? CM SHUNS THE SPOTLIGHT? I the ‘Common Man’, since he shows up to inaugurate just about any event— even those that do not necessarily have state importance. So it was a bit weird that it was his deputy, Nitin Patel, who inaugurated a potentially record-breaking fl ag. The Rajkot district collectorate attempted to set a new record for the largest handmade paper national fl ag made using origami. Created by Virajba Jadeja, the fl ag is a whopping 9.99 feet long and 6.66 feet wide, woven single-handedly using 40,573 paper pegs. Given how much mileage the CM could have got from this event, his absence left people, including the press, baffl ed! WORKING SMARTER TO AVOID WORKING T days. Call us cynical, but it’s almost like the cases we hear about are too easy! Have criminals become sloppy or is something else at play here? We did some investigating of our own and found that there is something else going on, after all. Eager to rack up higher numbers of solved cases, police personnel are falling over themselves to register seemingly trivial complaints and fi ghting for straightforward cases. After all, the simpler the case, the quicker it can be detected. Ergo, the higher than usual success rates. Certainly a good move for offi cers looking to climb the ladder, but not so great for the rest of us, surely. t has been a well-established precedent in the Gujarat babudom that an outgoing hen you try to approach government offi cers, they either n case you didn’t know, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s nickname is he cops certainly seem to be solving cases in record-time these BUGGED? Humanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.” On Thursday, a man opened fire at anti- CAA protestors outside Jamia Millia Islamia University, injuring one student, Shadab Fa- rooq in the arm. Fortunately , Shadab is out of danger. The firing took place despite heavy police presence in the area and the man was later overpowered by protesters. The students were heading from Jamia to Ma- hatma Gandhi’s memorial Rajghat. The march was stopped at the Holy Family Hospi- tal near the university . Students squatted in the area, asking the police to go back. The entire incident was caught on camera in which the shooter dressed in light coloured pants and a dark jacket, can be seen walking away on an empty road barricaded by police, then turning around and firing shots. He supposedly shouted something like “yeh lo azaadi” before firing. He is said to be a minor which is even more worrying. The incident today is not just a reflec- tion of deteriorating law and order in the capital but far worse. It is a state- ment of what the CAA and NRC are do- ing this nation. The elections in Delhi are fuelling the divide. Elections might be won or lost but will this hatred also go away? Toxic speeches add to the bitter environ- ment and twist the mind of the impression- able youth. The leaders of this nation need to think about why the youth of India is sitting in pro- tests on the roads and focusing on or worry- ing about grades, courses, employment and the hundreds of things that youth suppos- edly are apt to do. Why does a minor take up arms and indulge in an act of extreme vio- lence against people he does not even know? That a serious point of view has been taken by the government and strictest action or- dered is fine but this does not solve the issue at hand. After such an incident the protests will intensify and so will marginalisation. The protest against the shooting lasted more than seven hours with protestors being detained and later released. An attempt to murder case has been filed against the shooter, supposedly his FB ac- count which had hate posts has been deleted and his mark-sheet showing that he is a mi- nor is doing the rounds on social media. It is poignant that the incident occurred on Martyr’s Day . When the entire nation (hope- fully) was remembering the teachings of Ma- hatma Gandhi of non- violence and peaceful protest and also how he died, this entire inci- dent echoes that fateful day . It was yesterday when Gandhiji was re- membered more than ever through speeches, functions, commemorations and much more by the political leaders. They should also re- member his teachings. “Y KS TOMAR The author is a Political Analyst —Mahatma Gandhi T wo crucial developments in in- ternational arena including British prime minister Boris Johnson’s victory in parliament leading to passing of legislation to Brexit European union on Jan 31 coupled with American president Donald Trump Im- peachment and subsequent high-level tension with Iran may have fallout on India hence Prime Minister Narender Modi will have to tread cautiously to protect interests of the nation. Automobile, Pharma and IT might be the most affected. NASSCOM has predicted that the effect of Brexit will be felt on the $108 Billion Indian IT sector in the short term. Owing to Brexit, EU student enrolments are already slow- ing down and now EU students will stop getting any special treatment, levelling the playing field for all overseas applicants. Moreover, Indian students can work temporarily during this period making Brexit a hidden boon for them. POSITIVE IMPACT OF BREXIT ON INDIA Free trade agreement: After losing access to the EU single market, the UK would want to develop trade relations with emerging markets around the world. India, with strong eco- nomic fundamentals and a large domestic market, is in a better position. Easy market access: India is a significant Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) source for the UK because many Indian firms have used it as a gateway to the EU single market. Initially, af- ter divorcing from the EU, the UK wouldn’t like to miss Indian investment. It will at- tract Indian firms by offer- ing more incentives. The chance of obtaining employment will also enhance. 16,550 in 2016. The reason was stricter stu- dent immigration laws. It made getting a student visa and find- ing work post-study hard. As a result, students from India and non-EU nations opted for more welcoming countries. Last year, however, the tides changed. Brexit made a positive impact on Indian immigrants hoping to study in the UK. 21,165 students got the visa required for higher education in the UK in 2018, while in 2017 only 15,161 students got it. That’s a 40% increase. NEGATIVE IMPACT OF BREXIT ON INDIA An important impact would be visible on currency volatility as there wou ld be devolution of Pound and Euro due to Brex- it. Indian companies with a siz- able presence will have to bear the brunt. The UK has always been a gateway for Indian firms to en- ter the EU single market. After Brexit, this may cause short term distress on Indian firms. Brexit can affect the Indian flagship IT market sector, giv- en that EU accounts for 17 % of the global market and UK accounts for solely 3% out of that 17%. Brexit will increase overhead cost and setting up of new headquarters perhaps, in both EU and UK separately With Brexit, there will be a considerable spike in the price IMPACT IS VISIBLE The job prospects for Indian students in the UK, after Brex- it, may grow exponentially . Our identity, be- liefs and come from shaped by our interac- tions with others. From those we know well, to fleeting moments of eye contact with the stran- gers we walk past on the street. Previous genera- tions may have had periods of respite from the social world. But the emergence of social media platforms and smartphones means ac- cess to social information and interaction, 24 hours a day , has never been easier. This constant flow of in- teraction has an effect, and despite the adage that noth- ing on the internet ever goes away, social informa- tion can expire and become less meaningful after time. ear of missing out, or FoMO, is commonly de- scribed as that anxious feeling sponding, despite receiv- ing and reading messag- es. Tech companies are con- flicted between their goal of having as many users as possible on the one hand and their need to balance that with user wellbeing on the other. As an alterna- tive, we propose a liberal and open model that al- lows applications and services – developed by third parties that are trusted and authorised by the user – to access their social media ac- counts and online usage data with the aim of helping them to regulate FoMO and the problem- atic attachment to digi- tal media in general. Excessive FoMO is closely related to symp- toms of behavioural ad- diction. It often leads to undesirable behaviour such as the constant checking of social me- dia, even in an inappro- priate context, like while driving, and becoming overly preoccupied with reactions to online posts and messages. Our new research has identified the main trig- gers of this psychological phenomenon, the contexts in which it happens and the types of fears involved in it. We have also suggested new design features which social media platforms behaviours and are expect an immediate an- swer. When people fail to keep up with all these bat- tling messages and streams, FoMO rears its ugly head. (like losing signal or a dead battery), we found that it often happens when people are indeed connected. For example, when people have multiple devices and social media accounts and have little time or desire to check them all, they may fear missing important mes- sages and events.
