Electromagnetic Waves Facts • Electromagnetic waves require no medium—they can travel through empty space or a vacuum. • Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves caused by changing electric and magnetic fields. • Energy transferred by electromagnetic waves is called “electromagnetic radiation” • Electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed... 186,000 miles per second (Sun to Earth ~8 minutes). • Electromagnetic waves have different wavelengths and frequencies (measured in Hz—just like sound waves).
