  1. REDTACTON By Sowmya.Majeti SaiPriyadarshini.Vagvala

  2. Contents • Introduction • History • What is RedTacton? • How it Works? • Functional Features • Applications • Comparison with other Networks • Prototype Devices • Human Safety • Challenges • Conclusion

  3. Introduction Technology Need

  4. Introduction • Human Area Network……… • Uses the surface of the human body. • Technically, it is completely distinct from wireless and infrared technologies. • RedTacton can achieve duplex communication over the human body at a maximum speed of 10 Mbps. • Transmission path is formed when a part of the human body comes in contact.

  5. History • The concept of intra-body communication was first proposed by IBM in 1996. Reported technologies had two limitations  • The operating range through the body was limited to a few tens of centimeters. • The top communication speed was only 40 bit/s!! These limitations were overcome by NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation) located in Tokyo, Japan by using photonic electric field sensors and finally in 2005 they came up with a human area networking technology called ‘REDTACTON’.

  6. What is RedTacton? • RED: a warm color emphasis and cordial communications • TACTON: Action triggered by Touching. • RedTacton utilizes a point to point network, known as a Pico net. RED TACTON Device

  7. How it Works?

  8. The electric field Es that reaches the receiver is Es = Ea – (Eb + Ec)

  9. Transmitter sends data. • Transmitting transceiver creates a change in the field. • Field from human body dissipates into earth. • Electric field is received using sensing technology. • Receiving transceiver recognizes the change in the electric field. • Sensing technology measures the weak electric fields induced. • Electro-optical crystal uses laser to convert and read the signal.

  10. Functional Features

  11. Touch: Communication with just a touch or a step! TOUCHING GRIPPING

  12. Broadband & Interactive: Bandwidth does not deteriorate even with duplex operation & simultaneous access by many users!

  13. Any-Media:Works with many transmission media common in human life! Along surface ThroughMaterials

  14. Applications • One to One services • Intuitive Operations • Device personalization • New behavior patterns • Marketing applications

  15. Security applications User verification and lock management at entrance User verification and unlocking with just a touch

  16. Applications Instant private Data exchange Electronic business cards can be shared by shaking hands Touch printer to print User verification and unlocking with just a touch

  17. Comparison with other networks With respect to distance

  18. P: Poor E: Excellent

  19. PROTOTYPE DEVICES Portable Card-Size Transmitter • Transmission rate:230 kbps • Protocol: Proprietary protocol • Transmission method: Unidirectional Embedded Receiver • Transmission rate:230 kbps • Protocol: Proprietary protocol • Transmission method: Unidirectional • External device interface: 10/100Base-T,RS232C

  20. Under Progress: REDTACTON Transceiver (PC-Card Type) • Transmission rate: 10 Mbps • Protocol: TCP/IP • Transmission method: Half-duplex • Terminal interface: PCMCIA REDTACTON Transceiver (Hub Type) • Transmission rate:10 Mbps • Protocol: TCP/IP • Transmission method: Half-duplex • External device interface:10BASE-T USB Transceiver • Transmission rate not yet determined (in testing stage)

  22. CHALLENGES • The obvious barrier to entry is that the cost and time to develop HAN TECH. is very expensive. •  As a new technology HAN need to gain popularity among users to help pull the technology into the marketplace instead of having it pushed upon them.  • Widespread marketing campaigns will need to be developed to highlight the benefits of HAN technology to facilitate its adoption.  • Not useful unless many people adopt it. • It can be useful within few centimeters only.
