Today’s Objectives • “I can identify and explain causes of World War I” • “I will rate factors of the war explain which I think was the strongest cause.”
There were many causes to WWI in Europe • Put notes pages on 137 and 138 • Take notes on all these causes • Rate each cause on a scale from 1-10 • 1= little cause for war • 10= extreme cause for war
Europe claiming parts of Africa Imperialism • Imperialism (extending a country’s power and force in other areas) • European countries are fighting for colonies in Africa, Asia, for more land, power, resources ($) • Germany in conflict with Britain & France for land in Africa
My country is better! My country is best! Nationalism • An extreme loyalty to one’s nation • Nations want to be independent and dominate others • Many countries torn by tensions of nationalist groups • Combine with Militarism and Imperialism= increased tension in Europe
We have the best Navy! Well, our troops are stronger and guns are larger Militarism • To build a strong military to defend or promote national interests. • “arms race” • more Weapons/technology + troops/men + longer service time = More power • Germany builds up military by 73% • Others build up military to compete And we are not afraid to use them!
Alliances • A pact between countries to help and back each other up in the event of war. Loyalty to others • Alliances are Meant to prevent war, but ends up causing it! • 2 Sides: • Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Turkey • Triple Entente: France, Britain, Russia
Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (June 1914) • Serbians are upset that Austria-Hungary takes Bosnia through Imperialism • A Serbian Nationalist shoots Franz and wife during a trip to Bosnia • Austria-Hungary blames Serbia and goes to war. Germany backs up A-H • Russia and the Triple Entente backs up Serbia
