Check for Understanding Lesson Set Do you remember what the definition of “instruction” was that was given in a previous lesson? “Instruction is a PROCESS of DELIBERATE DECISION MAKING and ACTION that makes LEARNING MORE PROBABLE and more predictable successful than it would be without teaching.” …Remember It!!
  3. Check for Understanding Lesson Objective At the end of this session you will write out the (3) different types of total group responses used to check for understanding, with an example of each, to the satisfaction of the instructor.
  4. Check for Understanding Definition A deliberate action to assess the students’ grasp of the information presented.
  5. Check for Understanding Two Ways to Check for Understanding requires Active Participation: Sample Questions Typically an Individual Response Total Group Responses Choral Response Signal Response Private Response
  6. Sample Questions Check for Understanding ? What do you do after you ask the questions? Use the responses from questioning to determine where to go next in the lesson. Use verbal and non-verbal behaviors to evaluate students’ level of learning. Monitor and Adjust to teach to meet the needs of your students.
  7. Sample Questions Check for Understanding ? Monitoring and Adjusting means to observe student behavior during the learning and to choose alternatives in teaching or the learning, when necessary, to reach the desired learner outcome. An instructor should be constantly monitoring the students during the lesson. If monitoring and adjusting is not done, 40-80% of class time is wasted.
  8. Sample Questions Check for Understanding ? Monitor You need to constantly monitor the lesson to determine degree of instructional effectiveness. Use eye contact … constantly with all students Walk around during lesson Give positive reinforcement Provide student directed activities Use humor Wait time …. give all students time to think
  9. Sample Questions Check for Understanding ? Adjust Once determined adjustments may need to be made: Slow down … if material is too difficult Speed up … if material is too simple Jump ahead …. If students already know material Re-teach … if students are missing some important prior knowledge Different approach …. different tactics … video vs. lecture … visual, auditory, hands on, etc.
  10. Choral Response Check for Understanding Good to use when answers are short and need to be given in a specific order. Ex. Good for naming the three elements of an objective …. What … How Shown … How Well Ex. Good for reciting definitions Ex. Not good for naming areas on a soccer field … no real order can be provided chorally, use some other means to check that information.
  11. Signal Response Check for Understanding A visual only response Thumbs up / thumbs down Smile when you have the answer Show me with your fingers how many … Hands up for a “Yes” answer … then hands up for a “No” answer …. Force a decision, not a decision by default.
  12. Signal Response Check for Understanding Allows the instructor to work with large groups. Watch out for the piggy-backer who just copies his neighbor. That could be an indication that he doesn’t know, or is just unsure of himself. You may need to add something more to your signal. Be sure to add wait time to your request for a signal, or all you will get are the speed demons.
  13. Private Response Check for Understanding Student writes down the answer on their paper or laptop. Short answers that the instructor can see at a glance. Allows instructor to pick a student to call on that has the correct answer Instructor has already made sure that student’s answer is correct.
  14. Check for Understanding Lesson Assignment Write out and bring to the in-class sessions: The three (3) different types of total group responses used to check for understanding. Include anexample of each that could be used in an Entry Level Referee Clinic.
