Highlights of Forest Products Annual Market Review 2001-2002 (1-5) • Market downturn lasted from 2000 through 2001 in North America and Europe. • Upturn during the first half of 2002. • Prices turned upward in the first half of 2002. • Profits weak in 2001. • United States paper and paperboard demand and output contracted through 2001 and into the first quarter of 2002, extending a multi-year downturn from historical peaks in the second half of 1999.

Highlights of Forest Products Annual Market Review 2001-2002 (6-10) • European and Canadian pulp and paper production receded also in 2001. • Capacity rationalization continued in the United States. • Russia’s pulp and paper sector continued to experience growth. • “Other Europe” production of paper, paperboard and woodpulp increased. • Capacity growth remains well below historical growth rates
