  1. 5th Grade Friday Wrap upA recap of our week 12/6/13 Mrs. Faust, Mr. Cimino, Mrs. Thierjung, Mr. Fleming, & Mrs. Mowatt Writing This week in writing we worked on grammar lessons and started the immersion process for our next writing kits. Grammar included a review of different types of punctuation and lessons on sentence rhythm and paragraphing. During immersion, we discussed thesis statements and how they are used in informative texts to persuade. (W.5.2b, W.5.1b) Science This week we culminated our Too Good for Drugs unit by preparing and presenting skits and posters. Your children performed skits that demonstrated a peer pressure refusal strategy and created a poster illustrating one of the topics we discussed in the unit. We will begin our Levers and Pulleys kit next week.(SL.5.1C, SL.5.1D, SL.5.5) Social Studies The classes shifted it into high gear this week as they worked in cooperative problem solving groups, in an all out effort to prepare their colonial billboards. Most groups not only finished ,but also worked on their sales presentations, complete with props! The anticipation is building as the groups do last minute preparations for their colony sales presentation on Monday! Math This week we have continued to work with addition and subtraction of fractions, lessons 3.1 and 3.2 (5.NF.1, 5.NF.2). We moved on to adding and subtracting mixed numbers, lessons 3.5 and 3.6 (5.NF2, 5.NF.3). The most important part of all of these lessons was finding the Least Common Multiple so that we are able to find the Least Common Denominator, please take a moment to ask your child to show you this process! Another new addition to math is Mobymax, both Mr. Fleming and Mrs. Faust will be using this. The entire fifth grade was given their log in information and should be completing the Math Facts pretest this weekend! Important Upcoming Events • Choral concert 12/18 at 7:00p.m. Reminders *We can always be reached by email should you have any concerns or questions. • Donations are being accepted in classrooms for the Elf Fund. Send in your spare change for a good cause! • Movie permission slips and money are due Dec. 13th
