  1. Lesson 24 Converting Measurements

  2. Getting the Idea • Look at the Reference Sheet on page 336 of this book. On that sheet, you will find a list of equivalent measurements, like 12 inches= 1 foot. You can use those equivalents on the NJAsk to help you convert customary units, metric units or units of time. • Remember the rules: • When converting from large to small, you multiply. • When converting for small to large, you divide.

  3. Example 1 • Xavier takes two water bottles with him while he is hiking. One water bottle holds 1250 milliliters of water, and the second bottle holds 1800 milliliters of water. What is the total capacity, in liters, of his two water bottles?

  4. Strategy • Find the information you need on the reference sheet. Convert milliliters to liters. Then add. • Decide if you should multiply or divide. • Add to find the total capacity • The total capacity of Xavier’s two water bottles is 3.05 liters.

  5. Example 2 • Aaron has two wooden boards. One is 8 feet 6 inches long, and the other is 6 feet 10 inches long. What is the total length, in feet and inches, of the two boards. • Find the information you need on the Reference Sheet. Add the amounts. Then regroup inches to feet as needed. • Add the total length. • Regroup • The total length is….

  6. Practice time • Look at page 150. Let’s practice numbers 1-4 together. You are on your own to complete 5-8 and the open ended. We will go over them together.
