New York’s Hispanic Community Health Issues Confronting Hispanics • The Statistics: • More then 30% of Latino NY residents, 13% of US born Latinos in NYC and 40% NYC foreign born Latino immigrants are uninsured • 28.2% of NYC and 24.1% NYS Latino adults are obese • In NYC, Latinos have highest rates of diagnosed diabetes,13% of Latino population

New York’s Hispanic Community Health Issues Confronting Hispanics • Trends: • Lack of primary care access for insured and uninsured • Many communities lack private practices –heavy use of emergency room • Lack of culturally competent care • Physicians disconnected from community • Physicians must understand cultural diet • Need for balance between healthy behaviors/lifestyle and medical intervention
