Lecture notes will be posted on Blackboard a few days in advance of the Chapter. Annotated lecture notes will be posted a few days after each Chapter is completed. A set of basic and ‘exam standard’ exercises from Tro will be posted for each Chapter with a set of worked answers. You are encouraged to work through these exercises, exercises from Tro and/or Mastering Chemistry to develop your understanding.

Questions relating to labs should be addressed to the lab coordinator, Nedhal Al-Nidawy If you are unable to attend your lab through illness you should email Nedhal If you are re-taking CHEM-141 you may apply for a Prior Lab Credit (PLC) if you previously passed the practical part of the course. The PLC exempts you from re-doing the experiments. You should contact Nedhal to get a PLC Safety equipment (lab coat and safety glasses) is mandatory in the laboratories and available from the Chemistry Graduate Club before all labs EH 173-2. All students must complete the Chemical Control Centre Laboratory Safety Awareness Tutorial and Quiz prior to entering the lab.   8. ASSESSMENT The marking system for exams, papers, problem sheets and laboratory reports is designed to quantify each student’s progress towards achieving the learning objectives. The assessment is intended to supply the students with the necessary feedback to progressively improve their performance. ►The examinations consist of two midterm tests (40 min) and a final exam (3 hr). There is no supplementary/makeup exam for the midterms; the percentage is transferred to the final exam and the assignments. The final exam covers the whole course through multiple choice questions and written answer questions on the latter part of the course. ► Final mark: 40% on final examination If no laboratory (only if PLC) 30% on Two midterms (15% each) 50% on final examination 20% on laboratories 34% on midterm examination 10% on assignments 16% on assignments Without Mastering Chemistry assignments: 46% on final examination If no laboratory (only if PLC) and no MC 34% on Two midterm (17% each) 50% on final examination 20% on laboratories 50% on midterm examination • PLC – if you have previously passed the lab component of the course you can apply to Nedhal Al-Nidawy to be issued a Prior Laboratory Credit. Date of registration in a previous section of this course or laboratory information from another institution must be provided.

Good Learning Skills • University is not School and you are required to develop a more independent learning approach. • Read the Chapter before lectures (this gives you basic understanding of the course material and helps you clarify where you need to focus in order to develop better understanding) • Read the lecture notes, try and tackle the exercises presented in the lecture notes before class (you can follow the exercise better in class and use the time to develop understanding of how to problem-solve). • Consolidate on exercises in class through practice: • I will provide sets of selected exercises for each Chapter which are of ‘an appropriate standard’ and a subsequent set of worked answers a few days later so you can check your answers/methodology. If you had problems try similar questions from Tro where the numerical answers are given. • MC Resources and Assignments also help you develop understanding of course material. • Discuss exercises/problems with friends or ask your TA • There are many on-line resources e.g. Youtube and Chemistry websites • In addition we offer the Science Resource Centre • Dr Dutton and I both have Office Hours four days per week (M/T/W/Th). • Programs such as Windsor SOS offer coaching before midterms and finals • You can seek additional tutoring ($$) (jhayward@uwindsor.ca)

  10. Key Math Skills for CHEM-141 Quadratics Logs Integration

  11. Success in CHEM-141 requires you to develop good problem solving skills and an ability to successfully apply basic Math skills. Quadratic Equations (Chapter 13, 14, 15, 16) Solving quadratic equations will be essential. Integration (Chapter 13) Knowledge of calculus (integration) is helpful but you will not need to be able to do integration yourself  Plotting straight line graphs (Chapter 13) Identifying what to plot against what to get a straight line can be tricky! Logs (both log10 and ln), 10x and ex (Chapter 13, 15, 16, 17) A good working knowledge of logarithms and exponentials will be essential. Without this you will fail the course. Methods of Approximation e.g. x → 0 or x → ∞ (Chapter 13, 14, 15) An ability to make appropriate approximations will make your calculations simpler. I am not teaching Math so it is your responsibility to make sure you have the basic Math skills necessary, especially logs! I will provide some basic notes and revision exercises for those who need additional support.
