What we must do! At the center of the Common Core Lead high level, text based discussions Focus on Process, Not just content Create Assignments for real audiences and with real purpose Teach argument, not persuasion Increase text complexity Common Core Article
1. Lead High Level, Text Based Discussions “When you ask students to discuss a text as a whole class or in small groups, make sure that your questions are grounded in the text, and that students refer to the text in their responses.” Web tools for implementation : Xtranormal.com –Create discussions in video format http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN33N_zPB4k&feature=player_embedded Schoolwires- Blogging http://schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.us/Page/13897 Lino- Online post it note collaboration http://en.linoit.com/ Voicethreads- Online discussions centered around media and /or text http://voicethread.com/ https://voicethread.com/share/3344556/ D A S E I
2. Focus on Process, Not just content “The Common Core State Standards stress the importance of student discovery. In other words, we cannot merely fill students’ heads with content; we should provide them with opportunities to discover information on their own.” Prezi: www.Prezi.com – students create innovative presentations while constantly reviewing content Three Ring:www.threering.com –Create online student portfolios D A S E I
2. Focus on Process, Not just content • “The Common Core State Standards stress the importance • of student discovery. In other words, we cannot merely fill students’ heads with content; we should provide them with opportunities to discover information on their own.” • Movie Maker- A free download – View Videos • 2nd grade Science and Language Arts Video • 7th grade interview about the civil rights movement • ARMS Movie Awards- Project based learning Experiment #2 – Hatchet Example and handouts (6th grade) D A S E I
3. Create assignments for real audiences and with real purpose “The standards emphasize the importance of writing for a variety of audiences. Students should “write routinely over extended time frames…for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences” Boomwriter: www.Boomwriter.com – Create and collaborate on original books Wordle: http://www.wordle.net/ – Create word clouds to develop word choice (T-Shirt idea) Flocabulary: www.flocabulary.com - Use rap to teach curriculum concepts (Students create raps to teach content) Songsmith: http://www.cleanvideosearch.com/media/action/yt/watch?videoId=GFk5Ab3NPkY - make your own rap (reggae, country, R&B etc.) songs about curriculum Possible Common Core assignment : Create the soundtrack using a variety of the tech tools D A S E I
4. Teach argument, not persuasion “Some people use the terms argument and persuasion synonymously; however, the Common Core State Standards draw a distinction between the two. According to Appendix A of the CCSS, persuasive writing might “appeal to the audience’s self-interest, sense of identity, or emotions,” whereas a logical argument “convinces the audience because of the perceived merit and reasonableness of the claims and proofs offered rather than either the emotions the writing evokes in the audience or the character or credentials of the writer” Knovio: http://www.knovio.com/ - Create digital debates along while showing supporting documentation QR Codes linked to text- If I could give the world a gift…. 5. Increase text complexity “Besides making sure that an individual text is challenging enough, you can also raise the level of content in your classroom by using multiple sources of information. Providing multiple sources on the same topic can help students see a variety of perspectives, and it can help students adjust to texts at varying levels of difficulty.“ Lexilebook levels www.lexile.com/fab/search/categories Also, use your judgment along with Lexile levels. Example using: Kindles – providing options for student texts. ( Movie clip) D A S E I
