  3. Preventing Fires You can… • Identify & inspect fire hazards in your house • Use lab tested & approved heaters • Keep fire away from children • Keep combustible objects away from the stove

  4. Preparing for Fires Make sure to have… • Smoke detectors throughout your house • Multiple escape routes throughout your house • Fire department’s emergency number • A safe, outdoor meeting place • A window ladder Make sure to practice… • The escape plan • Alerting people in a fire

  5. What to do if You See a Fire or Hear the Smoke Alarm • Yell “fire!” and exit the room SAFELY and QUICKLY • Follow your escape plan when possible • Head to your meeting place • Call the fire department from outside the house

  6. What to do if Smoke/Heat/Flames Block All Exit Routes • Examine door • Use wet towels, sheets, clothes, etc. to stop smoke • Open windows slightly • Stay low and near a window • Signal the fire department when they arrive • Follow fire department's instructions

  20. Storms-During • Get inside • Beware of flooding • Can use natural gas in power outage • Be aware of CO2 • Check in with elderly neighbors • Layer clothing • HAT-you lose 90% of body heat from your head

Avalanches • What is it… • A flow of snow down a slope • Usually occurs in mountain terrain • When is it… • Usually during winter or spring • Can bury people and property under snow • More about… • Loose snow avalanches and slab avalanches- most fatalities. • They often occur on steep slopes • There are dry avalanches and wet ones (depending on moisture in snow). • What to do… • If you’re caught in one, start swimming to the top of the flow • When the avalanche comes to a halt, punch an air pocket into the settling snow
