The colorful sandstone cliffs rise almost 200 feet above lake level. The sandstone cliffs are beautifully sculpted in the form of shallow caves, arches, formations some of which resemble castle turrets. In 1966 the U.S. Congress designated it as the first National Lakeshore in the United States.

The upper region of the Tahquamenon Falls is called the Root Beer Falls and is more than 200 feet across. The River drains around 50,000 gallons of water per second making it the 3rd most voluminous waterfall in the east of the Mississippi River.
