Homework – 9/12/2016 • Read section 2.1 and take notes in your biology notebook • Define vocabulary words • Take note of main ideas • Sketch models • Write down questions you want to ask during discussion times.
Atoms • An atom is the smallest unit of matter. • Proton = positive (+) • Neutron = no charge • Nucleus – center of the atom • Electron = negative (-)
Elements • An element is a substance made of one type of atom. • 92 naturally occurring elements
Elements • Atomic number = number of protons / electrons • Symbol • Mass number = number of protons + neutrons
Isotopes • Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.
Radioactive Isotopes • Some isotopes are radioactive, so their nuclei are unstable and breakdown at a constant rate over time. • Can be dangerous • Have practical applications • Geologist date ages of rocks and fossils • (carbon dating) • Radiation can be used to treat cancer and kill bacteria
Compounds • A compound is a substance made from two or more elements in definite proportions. H2O NaCl
