  1. Solar energy New Mexico climate champions

  2. Phenomenon: Human behavior is changing Earth’s atmosphere and affecting the climate.

  3. Problem • Due to human production and use of energy, Earth’s climate is changing, creating social, economic, and environmental problems.

  4. Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering • Professional License Solar engineer Plans, designs, and implements solar energy projects. They can manage anything from large-scale municipal projects to home rooftop installations. Starting Salary in New Mexico: $81,410 Can earn up to: $127,820

  5. How solar panels work • Sunlight is made of small particles of solar energy, called photons. • When photons hit a solar panel, they dislodge electrons. • Due to special materials, dislodged electrons migrate towards the surface. • As these free, negatively charged, electrons surface, it creates an imbalance with bottom of panel, which is positively charged. • This imbalance creates voltage potential.

  6. Station: angle and output (12 minutes) • What is the best angle for solar panel output? • Task card has procedures • Complete data table • Complete graph • Answer “Angle and Output Explanation” question • Leave station the way that it was found

  7. Station: temperature and output (12 minutes) • What is the optimal temperature for solar panel output? • Task card has procedures • Complete data table • Leave station the way that it was found SAFETY: FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY. DO NOT LET WIRES COME IN CONTACT WITH WATER. WORK AS A TEAM.

  8. Station reminders • You have 12 minutes at each station. • Each group member must complete the data table and graph (angle only). • Read task cards carefully and follow directions precisely. • Work together as a team to move through experiment.

  9. Class data: angle and output

  10. Class data: temperature and output

  11. Design challenge Create an informational flier about the causes and effects of climate change that proposes solar energy as a solution. • Flier should include: • the cause of climate change, • the effects of climate change, • how solar energy can help mitigate climate change, • an argument for when solar energy is most efficient in New Mexico.
