Therapeutic gardening • The therapeutic value of gardening has been known since Ancient Egyptian times • Evidence suggests that therapeutic gardening can and does improve people’s health and well-being • There has been a recent surge in interest in how gardening and other outdoor activities can help people’s health and well-being

  5. Therapeutic Gardening in Scotland • c150 projects • Hospitals, secure settings, allotments, schools/colleges, OT units, GP surgeries, day centres. • Average 25 attendees • Client base – diverse

Benefits • Regular physical activity – diabetes, cancers, depression, cardiovascular illness, osteoporosis, obesity dementias. • Fresh produce – diet • Confidence, esteem • Literacy, work skills • Reminiscence work • Nurturing relationship • Responsibility • Stress relief • Rewarding – plants respond to attention • Social or solitary • Being seen to be able, independent, contributing

  8. Trellis Trellis is the national Scottish charity that supports, promotes, and develops the use of horticulture to improve health, well-being and life opportunities for all.

History of Trellis • Constituted: Jan 2005; registered as a Scottish charity & company limited by guarantee • Board: educators, health & social services professionals, freelance therapists, commercial horticulturalists, and voluntary sector workers with long connections to therapeutic gardening. From all over Scotland. • Oldest UK project : Scottish (Todhill, 1913). Scottish practitioners networking since 1980s. Thrive = partner in Scotland twice: 1990s, 02-06. • Post-devolution : – time for locally-determined services, rooted in Scottish context. Backed up by 2 evaluations.
