  1. “ArsPoetica” Friday, March 10

  2. From Residencia en la tierra, I (1933) • This is from his Residency Cycle (his diplomatic years) • think root word – residence • Conflicted between longing for social order and love of country. • This collection of poems is marked as his literary breakthrough

  3. Meaning • (Latin for "The Art of Poetry") is a lyric poem of twenty-four lines. It describes the qualities a poem should have if it is to stand as a work of art.

  4. Different Translation • With a partner, look at both translations: • Find and underline the differences • Write the effect of the different word choice in the margin

  5. Dominant Effect • Through a manic and desperate tone, Neruda illustrates the anguish a writer endures during the process of creating art.

  6. Techniques • Tormented diction creating a desperate tone • Similes – comparing writing to: • Grieving a loss • A woman in labor • A haunted house • Life without nature • Lack of “ending punctuation” causing the sense of the process being futile.

  7. Creative Interpretation: Chain Poem • On the top of your page, write the word ART or ARTIST • Write a list of the first words that come to mind when you think of ART or ARTIST • Your poem will incorporate those words – in the order that you listed them – do not worry about cleanliness, rhyming (unless it happens naturally), or clarity. • Let’s see what we can come up with!
