  1. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES 13-10-2019

  2. RECAP OF OUR LAST STUDY “The believer’s risen life”: The risen life triumphs over sin and the works of the flesh. It is a life of spiritual and holy service with eternity in view. We must cease from the works of the flesh and put on the character of Christ. Love is the virtue that should mark us. Our Christianity should be visible also at home. Wives are to submit to their husbands while children should obey their parents in line with the Scriptures. The husband’s love for the wife must be selfless and sacrificial.

  3. TODAY’S STUDY:LESSON 764: ADMONITION TO PRAYER AND GOOD CONDUCT MEMORY VERSE: …… “Continue in prayer and watch in the same with thanksgiving” (Colossians 4:2). TEXT:Colossians 4:1-18

  4. INTRODUCTION Verse 1 of this chapter concludes the household duties that ended chapter 3 with specific instruction to masters to be fair. Employment in those days was mainly by masters who absorbed servants into their household; hence the frequent mention of servants alongside other household members. The rest of the chapter deals our duty to pray in general and for ministers in particular. There is also general instruction on holy conduct and appreciation of faithful companions in ministry. • QUESTION 1: Why should employers ensure fairness and equity in dealing with their workers? – Colossians 4:1; Ephesians 6: 9

  5. THE DEMAND FOR IMPORTUNATE PRAYINGColossians 4:2-4; Ephesians 6:18-20; Luke 18:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:17 We are urged to pray continually and also be watchful and thankful (1 Peter 5:8; Romans 12:12). Christ prayed before teaching His disciples; His teaching on prayer is a model for ours (Luke 11:1-13; Matthew 6:9-15). As a gospel ambassador, Paul requested specific prayers to make his ministry successful: that there would be open doors of ministry, that there would be boldness to preach, that souls would be saved and believers might grow in grace. That should be the focus of our prayer for the Church and ministers.

  6. THE DEMAND FOR IMPORTUNATE PRAYINGColossians 4:2-4; Ephesians 6:18-20; Luke 18:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:17 • QUESTION 2: State the reasons Christians should embark on importunate praying – 1 Peter 5:8, Isaiah 40:31, Philippians 4:6 • QUESTION 3: Why should we continually pray for the church and ministers? – Colossians 4:3; 1 Corinthians 16:9, Ephesians 6:18-20

  7. CHRISTLIKE CONDUCT AND ITS PROFITSColossians 4:5-6; 1 John 2:15-17; 2 Peter 1:3-7 We should conduct ourselves wisely in the world. We are expected to communicate the gospel we preach by living like Christ. We should not compromise the gospel or be worldly. We should “redeem the time” by serving the Lord with zeal, avoiding time wastage and using every opportunity to spread the gospel. Our speech should be with grace. The answer of our mouth should have positive influence. That is why our hearts must be filled with God’s word and grace. • QUESTION 4: How does our conduct in the society influence the gospel? – Matthew 5:19; Philippians 2:14,15

  8. APPRECIATION OF GOSPEL STEWARDSColossians 4:7-18; 2 Timothy 4:12,19 Paul concluded his epistle by acknowledging his companions. These ministers were faithful in various ways, including teaching, running errands, accompanying him in journey and offering their houses for worship. This teaches us to be faithful in supporting ministers. It also shows how a leader should appreciate faithful partners. Paul likewise encouraged Archippus, a possibly slacking minister, to wake up. We must stir one another up! He ended by asking for support in prayers. • QUESTION 5:How can a leader’s appreciation and guidance improve the spread of the gospel? – 1 Corinthians 16:10,11

  9. CONCLUSION We are called to continual praying for ourseleves and for the work of God. Also, as believers, our lives should reflect Christ in the world. We should not ridicule the gospel through compromise or worldliness. Our speech should be with grace and wisdom. Moreover, we should be faithful in supporting our leaders through personal sacrifice in ministry, giving our resources for worship and prayer. Leaders should appreciate faithful companions, thereby encouraging them in service.
