  4. Where are Japanese Beetles a problem? • The Midwest (Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois) • The East coast (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio) • Southern states (Alabama, Kentucky)

  5. What problems do Japanese Beetles cause? • Destruction of over 300 different species of plants including fruits, field and garden crops • Destruction of roots • Skeletonization

  6. Why should the public care? • Japanese beetles destroy not only garden flowers and trees, but also commercial places like turf and golf courses. • $450 million spent on repair and pest management.

  7. Where did the Japanese beetle originate? • Originated in Japan • First recorded in 1916 in Riverton, New Jersey

  8. Why Japanese beetles thrive in the U.S • Wide variety of host plants (300+) • Favorable climate • Few natural enemies

  9. Control • Physical removal (in cool climates) • Attract and trap (not always effective) • Dry out soil (females lay eggs in wet soil) • Organophosphates and carbamates • Certain types of wasps attack young beetles
