  2. What is point of view? • Point of view(POV) is the way the author allows you to see and hear what's going on in the story or text.

  4. 1st POV • First Person - the story is told from the perspective of a character in the story. • The narrator is part of the story and can only talk about what they know or see. • The author uses words like, “I,” “me,” and “we.”

  5. Example of 1st POV in literature • The choice of first person, generally makes the writing very personal and engages the reader closely with the events. A personal narrative would be written in 1st POV. • Examples: • Iwalked quickly down the street with mybest friend. • When Iarrived at my surprise party I couldn’t believe all of the people that were there just to see me!

  6. Examples of 1st POV in Nonfiction • The use of the plural form of the first person (we) is often used by writers to include the reader in factual writing. • Example: • Weshould all take responsibility for our planet.

  7. 2nd POV • Second Person - the story is told to the reader, making you (the reader) a character in the story. • The author uses words like, “you” and “your.” This is the rarest point of view used in literature. • This point of view is usually found in “how to” books, cook books, letters, speeches, and advertisements.

  8. Example of 2nd POV in literature • Using the second person, narrators engage the reader and ask them to participate in the events or feelings. • For example: • Youwould be really scared too! • Yourlegs would be crammed up against the seat in this type of theatre.

  10. 3rd POV • Third Person – the narrator is telling the story but is not a character in the story. • The author uses words like, “they,” “he,” “she,” “it,” or “them.”

  11. Example of 3rd POV • 3rd POV is when the narrator is telling a story as an outsider. • Examples: • They walked down the street unaware of what was ahead. • She was the fastest on the team.
