  2. Beam welding

  3. Beam welding • Energy is transferred by laser or electron beam • Melted material creates weld joint after cooling down • Weld is narrow, additional material is not necessary • Welding is usually done under protective gas

  4. Welding by laser beam • Beam focusing to point of 1 mm diameter will heat it up to 20.000 °C • Depth of weld depends on beam’s diameter speed of feed and laser efficiency

  5. Steering spindle – welded by laser beam

  6. Disadvantage of laser beam welding Advantages of laser beam welding • Welds all weld-able materials • High speed • Narrow welding width • Small temperature deformation • High tensile strength • Velké investiční náklady • Odstínění pracoviště proti uniknutí laserového paprsku

  7. Welding by electron beam

  8. Electron beam welding • Electron beam achieves narrower and deeper welds • It is an advantage to weld layer melt able metals (high melting temperature) • Alloys covered by layer of difficult melt able oxide (aluminum) • Field of using – aircraft building

  9. Advantage of electrode beam welding • Welding of difficult weld able metals, for example: titanium and its alloys • High precision of beam’s guidance and high weld strength

  10. Disadvantages of electron beam welding • High investment and operation costs • Difficult preparation of welding parts • Necessity of work place shielding against roentgen radiation

  11. Question and rerun • What are the advantages of electron beam welding?
