  8. U.S. vs Mexico Mexico’s legal system differs from that of the U.S. Most importantly, many of the legal rights and protections that U.S. citizens enjoy at home do not apply in Mexico and punishments for many crimes are more severe. Worldwide, Mexico has the highest number of arrests of U.S. citizens abroad and the largest U.S. prisoner population outside the United States. In Mexico, for an accused personone of the most critical differences is that under Mexican criminal law, the accused is essentially considered guilty until proven innocent. Mexico does not allow bail on personal recognizance and therefore a cash bail must be posted which may not be available depending on the potential sentence.

  12. Inside Russia's Prison Vladimir, built in 1782, has only been remodeled once. Butyrka, built in 1771, is the oldest jail in Russia. Russian budget does not allot much money for these prisons. The Russian federation has 14 maximum security prisons. For decades OA-1/ CT-2 in Vladimir, was just that, a prison. With the increase of crime rate, Vladimir prison made some changes eight years ago. Now it is a jail and prison, currently holding 900 pre-trail detainees and 500 inmates who were actually sentenced. Of these 500 inmates, most of them are what were referred to as the “cream of the (criminal) crop” or the worst of the worst.

  13. Corrections cont. In the United States, inmates are given minimum, medium or maximum-security classification. Russian inmates also have a three-tiered classification depending on the seriousness of the crime. Inmates are sentenced to colonies and are locked up in dormitory type fashion. The colonies are separated by classifications. These classifications are "general regime", "strict regime" and "severe regime".

  14. Corrections cont. Inmates can easily move from general regime to strict regime. This is somewhat like the grading system within Stateville. Inmates are given a grade ? A grade, B grade or C grade. Those inmates in A grade have all their privileges. Those in B grade have some restricted privileges, such as fewer visits to commissary, while those in C grade are generally restricted from any privileges. The "general regime" is for non-serious crimes that are usually sentences of five years or less.

  15. Conclusion What is right and what is wrong? What country has the best criminal justice? Who do we care the most about? How do we go about to change it?
