  1. Are Name Brand Paper Towels more absorbent Then Generic Brand Paper Towels? Early Middle School Grade Level By: Mia Lagares

  2. Experiment: • The purpose of this experiment is to determine which brand of paper towel is more absorbent or if their even is a difference between the name brand paper towels or the generic paper towels. • You need to have 4 large clear beakers/cups, 4 types of equally sized paper towels (2 types of name brand and 2 types of generic), 4 rubber bands, a dropper with measurements marked on it, and enough water supply mixed with a blue die for visual purposes.

  3. Experiment: • Place one of each type of paper towel on top of the clear beakers/cups while using the rubber band to hold the paper towel in place. You do this by placing it around the top of the opening. • Once all 4 containers are properly wet up with the paper towels you can begin the actual experiment. • Take 1mL of blue water and drop it on every paper tower directly in the center of the container's opening.

  4. Experiment & Collected Data: • Repeat with procedure until the paper towel is no longer absorbing the water and you can see the blue water at the bottom of the clear container. • Record how many mL every paper towel absorbs until the blue water goes through the paper towel and the blue water is visible in the bottom of the container itself. • Compare your recording to determine which brand of paper towels are more absorbent. The higher number of mL it took for the blue water to be seen at the bottom of the container, the more absorbent the paper towel itself is.

  5. Falsifiable: • This experiment can be performed in other ways besides the one shown. Another example would be to spill an the same amount of liquid in different areas on the same surface and count how many paper towels it takes for each type of paper towel to clean up the spill entirely. • Or you could even use the same method for this experiment but test a larger amount of brands during the experiment.

  6. Logical • This experiment is logical because the paper towel that absorbs the most mL of blue water is most absorbent paper towel, whether it be a name brand paper towel or a generic brand.

  7. Replicable • This experiment is replicable because all of the materials and procedures required to perform it are provided.

  8. Sufficient • This experiment is sufficient because the answer to the experiment’s main question can be proven by the recorded results. • But it is also insufficient because of the fact that I did not physically perform this experiment.
