  1. The U. S. Department of Energy’s Mixed-Analyte Performance Evaluation Program (MAPEP)FY 2014 Review Shane Steidley DOE Radiological and Environmental Sciences Laboratory ASP Meeting 2014 Sept. 18, 2014

  2. MAPEP Series 29-30 Overview • MAPEP Participant Policy • Participating Laboratories • Inorganic Uncertainties • Strontium 89/90 Air Filter • Certified Reference Materials Update

  3. MAPEP Participant Policy • Agree to abide by MAPEP’s System or Export Control Agreement • Labs notified if: • MAPEP standards are returned to RESL • Results are not reported in two Series • Non-responding labs will be deactivated

  4. MAPEP System Usage Agreement

  5. Export Control Agreement Export Control Agreement = System Usage Agreement

  6. Sys Usage Agrmnt

  7. MAPEP Series 29 & 30 by the Numbers

  8. Inorganic Uncertainty Reporting • Analytical results are not absolute • Uncertainty establishes the range around the result where the true value is expected • Inorganic False Positive and Sensitivity Tests

  9. No Uncertainty Reported

  10. Must Report Numeric Results

  11. MAPEP Series 30 False Positives

  12. MAPEP Series 30 Sensitivity Evaluations

  13. New MAPEP Uncertainty Flags • Uncertainty flags are for information only • Series 30 • ~ 82% Uncertainties = A • ~ 10% Uncertainties = N or <2% or >30%

  14. Frequently Asked Questions • “Can I just report my MDL?” • Report the calculated result and total uncertainty • “Can I report a less than value?” • No, non-numeric results are not allowed • “What if I’m contractually obligated to use a specific procedure?” • The laboratory is responsible to ensure the procedure they use produces accurate results

  15. Uranium Isotope Results Reported By Alpha & Gamma Spec --Natural-- ------------- Depleted ----------------- ------- Natural-------

  16. MAPEP-14-MaS30Radiological Uranium-238

  17. Performance Evaluation of Sr-89/90 in Series 31 Air filter • Many requests for performance testing of fresh fission products • Renewed interest since Fukushima • Sr89/90, I-131, Zr-95/Nb-95, etc. • Twenty-three laboratories request the Sr-89/90 Air Filter • 12 requested Sr-89 out of 32 who routinely analyze Sr-90 • 11 who don’t report Sr-90, requested SrF31 • Do all 32 labs have analytical capability in Sr-89? • Is there a continued interest in Sr-89/90 or other fresh fission products determinations?

  18. RESL’s CRM Update

  19. MAPEP PT Standards available as CRMs

  20. Certificate of Traceability

  21. RESL Food CRMs

  22. RESL CRMs

  23. Rad Decay Report

  24. MAPEP Websites http://www.inl.gov/resl/mapep • Public access • Statistical summary http://mapep.inl.gov • Requires account /password • Used for reporting/reviewing data • Various search utilities, historicalperformance reviews, graphs, individual laboratory reports, sample descriptions, program information
