Describe the irony in the judge’s decision to punish Jurgis by putting him in jail. 3. What does the poem at the end of the chapter say about the value to society of placing a man in jail? One of the most moving passages in this novel is Sinclair’s description of Jurgis’ grief over Ona’s death. Study the following paragraph and find an example of a simile and a metaphor. Chapter 20: 1.
