  1. Quick Start Expectations Write in your planner and stamp sheet: Homework: Practice 1-6 worksheet Warm-up

  2. Absolute Value • Measures distance from zero • Never negative because absolute value only answers the question “how far?” NOT “In what direction?” • We use “bars” to explain absolute value Example: I2I = 2 I-2I = 2 We read this as “the absolute value of 2 is 2, and the absolute value of -2 is 2.” • Which has greater absolute value… I25I or I-75I ? • Discuss as group and justify • Will the negative number always have the greater absolute value? Please support your answer with an example.

  3. Examples! • I5I = • I-8I = • I-4+12I = • I-7I + 3 = • I2-5I = 5 8 8 10 3

  4. The current scores are -300 for Super Brains, 150 for Rocket Scientists, and -500 for Know-It-Alls. Know-It-Alls The Know-It-Alls have not been doing well at the Math Fever game and currently have -500 points. They are hoping to improve their scores by answering the next four questions correctly, however, it does not work out well for them. The next question they answer is worth 100 points, but they answered it incorrectly. The second question is worth 200 points and they answer it correctly. The third question they answer incorrectly and is worth 150 points. The final question is worth 50 points and they get it wrong. What is their new score?

  5. Your task: Part One: • Start with the current score for each team. • Represent the new teams’ scores in two different ways. • Solve for their new scores. Part Two: The number sentences below describe what happens at a particular point during a game of Math Fever. Find each missing number. Explain what each sentence tells about a team’s performance and overall score. 1. BrainyActs: -200 + 150 - 100 = ____ 2. MathSperts: 450 - 200 = ____ 3. ExCells: 200 - 250 = ____ 4. SuperMs: -350 + ____ = -150 Once you finish, raise your hands. Ms. C will come over and stamp your completed work. Then begin your homework.
