  1. The Mind Hesitant(1948)

  2. Thesis William uses enjambment to show how we as humans, never stop thinking and our thoughts are continuous.

  3. Language • Metaphor: the mind is compared to a river • Symbolism • River/stream • Represents the flow of time and life • Tide • Strength of emotions, new beginning, washing away the old • Imagery • Examples • “Its banks snow” • “the water and the shore” • “bound by a ribbon”

  4. Structure • Enjambment: sentence runs onto the next line without a break. • Stream of consciousness- thoughts are continuous and keeps going. • Repetition: river 2x, mind 4x, tide 2x,water 2x • Stanza: 4 lines in each stanza. • First 3 have capitalized letters and last 3 have punctuation. • Isolated words • “Senses” • represents how the mind and brain senses different things like emotions and behavior. • “Change” • represents how our thoughts always change.

  5. Interpretation • The river is a continuous, flowing body of water which leads to an ocean, sea or lake. • The mind consists of thinking, reasoning, consciousness, and judgment. • The river and the mind is the same because in nature, everything depends on water to survive and in the brain, we depend on our mind to make our decisions, reasoning and thoughts. Don’t have a voice without a mind.

  6. confused The Mind Hesitant Sometimes the river becomes a river in the mind or of the mind or in and of the mind Its bank snow the tide falling a dark rim lies between the water and the shore And the mindhesitant regarding the stream senses a likeness which it will find- a complex image: something of white brows bound by a ribbon of sooty thought beyond, yes well beyond the mobile features of swiftly flowing waters, before the tide will change and rise again, maybe hesitant Still confused Covered or color of soot.

  7. Activity • List some thoughts that would cause you to become hesitant. For ex: what to eat for lunch.
