6. 2009 Teacher Summer Institute Teaching About Africa: Methods and Strategies June 9-19, 2009 http://www.kasc.ku.edu/programs/teacher_institutes/2009/index.shtml • The 2009 Teacher Summer Institute will focus on enhancing K-12 teacher knowledge about Africa as well discussing effective pedagogical approaches that can be used in the classroom. KU graduate students and upper level undergraduate students who wish to enhance their knowledge of Africa will also find these two weeks very enlightening. • This Institute is recommended for all teachers and educators who teach about Africa in their classrooms, or who seek quality information and thought-provoking discussion about different aspects of African history, culture and societies. The daily format includes an array of learning sessions - talks and panel discussions by KU African area specialists, library research time, and a field trip to the Kansas City area. Participants will create lesson plans to be used in their own classrooms, as well as by other educators, and will have opportunities to meet with faculty consultants for content and resource suggestions. The last two days of the Institute, teachers will also have an opportunity to collaborate on creating teaching modules based on the content and strategies learned. • CREDITGraduate credit will be available to those who wish to enroll and pay for tuition and fees. Graduate students who are taking the summer workshop for credit are required to prepare research projects approved by the Institute Director. These research projects will also be presented on the last two days of the Institute. In-service credit has been applied for the Lawrence and Topeka school districts. If you would like help obtaining in-service credit for your district, please let us know. • AWARDS A limited number of awards are being offered to teachers/educators participants this year. To apply for the award, write a brief essay answering the following questions about your needs and interests in teaching Africa, and include one letter of reference from your primary evaluator.Awards ($200 each) may be used for graduate tuition and fees, or other related Institute/educational resource expenses. They will be offered to applicants who meet the following criteria: consistent attendance and participation, oral presentation and completion of a written teaching module ( turn in to the Institute Director by June 19th) to be posted on our website.The deadline to apply is Monday, June 1, 2009. The awards are limited; we shall therefore consider recipients carefully as per set criteria.
