Evaluating Flood Risks, Safety, and Land Prices Across Five University Areas

In this comprehensive analysis, we evaluate five distinct areas surrounding a university to ascertain their flooding risks, crime rates, traffic conditions, hurricane safety, land prices, and proximity to fault lines. We classify floods into three categories: 500-year, 100-year, and 10-year floods, ranking them from strongest to weakest. Additionally, we analyze the impact of storm surges during hurricanes and how geography influences their severity, particularly along the Gulf of Mexico. The study also highlights key factors affecting crime through data mapping techniques.

  1. Orso University

  2. Which of the five areas is most likely to flood? Which of the five areas have the least crime? What are the roads and traffic like in the five areas? Which area will be the safest during a hurricane? Which area has the cheapest land? Are there any fault lines near the five locations? ASK

  3. Acquire-Floodplains Q. What are the three different categories of floods. Rank them in order from strongest to weakest. A. 1.500 Year Flood 2.100 Year Flood 3.10 Year Flood

  4. Acquire-Flooding Data

  5. Acquire- Hurricane Data • What is a storm surge? • A large amount of water that hits the coastline where a hurricane is coming through. • Why is storm surge such a huge problem in the Gulf of Mexico instead of places like the Atlantic Ocean? • There is lower pressure in the Gulf of Mexico. • Explain the three causes of storm surge. • When lowpressurebuilds, water from the ocean is sucked to the middle of the storm. • Hurricanes • Wave and tide action • What makes storm surge so devastating? • When the surge reaches the coast, it destroys everything in its path, and buildings that aren’t specifically designed to handle a storm surge will get crushed.

  6. Acquire- Fault Data F. The images included on the map are examples of which kind of weathering? G. How far are Harris County’s faults moving per year? H. How would faults and weathering impact your University?

  7. Acquire- Crime Data • Give three examples oflayers that you could add to this map that would provide additional information about the crime level in each area. Do not use additional crimes for your answer, credit will not be given • 1. Closest Police Station • 2. Estimated Police Response Time • 3. Closest Hospital

  8. Acquire- Land Prices
