  1. Please stand. Turn to Romans 8:5-9. Why and How We Walk According to the Spirit

  2. Please use a pew Bible if you didn’t bring a Bible with you. Pg. 834

  3. 8 Points About A Believer’s Relationship with God the Holy Spirit

  4. Romans 8:5-7 • “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. • Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.”

  5. Romans 8:8-9 • “So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. • Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

  6. Point #1 • Every day, throughout the day, the Christian is presented with two choices: • Follow the flesh 2. Follow the leadership of the Spirit OR

  7. The Holy Spirit The Person, Purpose, and Power of the Spirit

  8. Romans 8:9 • “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of Goddwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

  9. Different Names—One Spirit! • Ephesians 4:4 • “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling . . .” • 1 Corinthians 12:13 • “For by one Spiritare we all baptized into one body . . .”

  10. God—the Holy Spirit • One God—revealed as Three Persons • Spirit of God • Spirit of Christ • The Spirit • Spirit of Holiness • Spirit of Glory • Spirit of Life NOT an “it” & NOT an “influence”

  11. The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is a person that can be grieved, blasphemed, resisted, lied to, prayed to, and obeyed.

  12. The Holy Spirit • His Work • Teaches (John 14:26) • Testifies (John 15:26) • Guides (John 16:13) • Convicts (John 16:8) • Regenerates (Titus 3:5) • Intercedes (Romans 8:26) • Commands (Acts 13:2) His Purposes

  13. Point #2 • The Holy Spirit indwells Christians as a person representing the presence of God. • Vs. 9 • “If so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you . . .”

  14. It appears that Christians forget “that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Cor. 6:19-20).

  15. Point #3 • You are NOT a Christian if the Spirit of Christ does not dwell within you. • Vs. 9 • “Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

  16. Turn to Ephesians 1:13.

  17. The Difference • Inner Man • Soul • Spirit • Heart The Person of God— the Holy Spirit

  18. The Holy Spirit is a Gift. • 1 John 4:13 • “Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.” The Holy Spirit is a gift to all who believe that Jesus is the Christ.

  19. Acts 11:16-17 • “Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. • Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?”

  20. Acts 11:18 • “When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.” Spirit-baptism takes place at conversion.

  21. Romans 8:5 • “For they that are after the flesh do [set their] mind the things of the flesh; • but they that are after the Spirit [set their mind on] the things of the Spirit.”

  22. Point #4 • My relationship with the Holy Spirit occurs in my mind. • The Mind is • the element or complex of elements in an individual that feels, perceives, thinks, wills, and especially reasons. Merriam-Webster

  23. The Mind • Inner Man • Soul • Spirit • Heart The Person of God— the Holy Spirit

  24. 2nd Death Romans 8:6 • “For to be carnally minded is death; • This is the second death; it cannot be the death that passes the soul from this earth to eternity, because both believers and unbelievers all participate in that death.”

  25. Second Death Revelation 20:6, 11-15; 21:1-8

  26. Commentary on Romans 8:6 • For to be carnally minded means to think continually about and constantly desire the things characteristic of fallen, sinful human nature; that is, to think just the way the unbelieving world thinks, emphasizing that what it thinks is important, pursuing what it pursues in disregard of God's will. ESV Study Bible

  27. Point #5 • Disciples of Christ gain the victory by setting their minds on the things of the Spirit as the Spirit leads, guides, and directs their thoughts and actions.

  28. The Victory Begins in the Mind. • And I am NOT talking about the “power of positive thinking!” Turn to Philippians 2:5.

  29. The Victory Begins in the Mind. • Philippians 4:8 • “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

  30. The Victory Begins in the Mind. • Romans 8:6 • “But to be spiritually minded is life and peace . . .” • Isaiah 26:3 • “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

  31. The Victory Begins in the Mind. • 1 Chronicles 22:19 • “Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of the LORD.”

  32. The Victory Begins in the Mind. • Colossians 3:2 • “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”

  33. Point #6 • Without the Spirit of God living within you guiding your life, you CANNOT and DO NOT please God.

  34. Romans 8:7 • the carnal mind is enmity against God Enmity Defined: • positive, active, and typically mutual hatred or ill will Is this a carnal thought?

  35. Romans 8:8 • “So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” I need to ask, “Am I in the flesh or being led by the Spirit?”

  36. Point #7 • The purpose of God sending His Spirit to indwell believers is to increase the probability that believers consistently please God. Question: Do you agree with the statement that my greatest desire in life should be to please God?

  37. The Spirit’s Work • The ultimate goal of all of life is know and love God, • Make Him known, • And thereby Glorify God. This is precisely the Spirit’s work.

  38. Point #8 • The Word of God commands Christians to be filled with the Holy Spirit. • The solution to carnality is the filling of the Spirit. • The filling of the Spirit will result in a greater witness of the presence and power of Christ in my life.

  39. Turn to Ephesians 5: 18-21.

  40. Be Filled with the Holy Spirit. • Ephesians 5:18 • “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit . . .” • Like alcohol seems to control the drunk—the Spirit of God should control the life of the believer.

  41. Be Filled with the Holy Spirit. • Ephesians 5:18 • “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit . . .” • “Be Filled” is a present imperative • Implying that I am to be continually filled • This is not a one-time event.

  42. What Does the Filling Look Like • Vs. 19—We praise God. • Vs. 20—We are thankful. • Vs. 21—We get along well.
