  2. Background • David’s life went quickly from triumph to tragedy (1 Samuel 16-30) • Pursued by Saul; assassination attempts were made on him; hide out in the wilderness; friends turned against him; armies to fight (about 10 years)

  3. In Times of Trouble • David strengthened himself in the Lord (1 Sam. 30:6; comp. 1 Sam. 2:4, 10) • He had done this early in life (1 Sam. 17:37,45) • As a result, the Lord was with David (1 Sam. 18:12,14,28)

  4. In Times of Trouble • How did David strengthen himself? He turned to God in prayer (1 Sam. 23:2, 4, 10-11; 30:8) • He trusted in God for help and guidance (1 Sam. 22:3) • He let God take care of the evil (1 Sam. 24:12; 25:39; 26:9-11)

  5. In Times of Trouble • How did David strengthen himself? He revealed God’s word • He composed several psalms during the challenging times of his life (Psa. 18, 34, 52, 54, 56, 57, 59, 63, 142)

  6. In Times of Trouble • He fixed his heart on God and His word • He continued to praise God and worship; meditated day and night on God’s goodness • He believed God would vindicate his trouble

  7. In Times of Trouble • How did David strengthen himself? He also allowed close, godly friendships to build him up (1 Sam. 23:14-16)

  8. In Times of Trouble • He turned to God in prayer • He turned to God’s word • He turned to godly friends

  9. Dealing with Challenges Today • Christians face challenges today: • Emotional and physical • Family and friends • Job and finances • Trials and temptations • Society and the world • Standing for truth

  10. Dealing with Problems Today • In many cases God is left out, or forsaken altogether • God is angered when we do not turn to him for help (Isa. 30:1-5,15-16; 31:1-3; Jer. 17:5-8)

  11. David Strengthened Himself in the Lord • Let us put our trust in God (1 Pet. 4:11; 5:10) • Let us turn to God’s word (Eph. 1:19; 3:16-17; 6:10; Col. 1:9-11) • Let us turn to the support of godly Christians (1 Thess. 5:11)
