  1. Our Fascination with Insulation

  2. Remind and Revisit… • What are rocks made of? • In which type of rock would I be most likely to find a fossil? • Which water feature are salt water features? • Name at least three fresh water features.

  3. Review… • What are the three states of matter? solids, liquids, and gases • Label ice, water, and water vapor as a solid, liquid, or gas. ice;solid water;liquid water vapor;gas • When a solid changes states to a liquid, what has happened? (Think ice to water.) Melting

  4. Insulators Definition Material in which thermal energy can’t move easily

  5. A cooler is an insulator. • This helps prevent heat from flowing in or out.

  6. Materials 2 Styrofoam cups gallon plastic bag 1 sheet aluminum foil 1 sheet waxed paper 10 cotton balls 2 pieces of tissue paper 2 paper bags 2 paper plates 1 roll masking tape 2 paper cups 1 piece felt Rules Receive materials. When the teacher says “Begin”, you will have 15 minutes to work on your insulator. Be sure to label it with your group’s names. You will be given a 2 minute warning. When the timer stops, you must stop, as well. The Great Insulation Challenge *Early Finisher Activity*

  7. Time is up! • STOP working • Make sure your names are located on the insulator. • Place your freeze pop in your insulator. • Determine the person with the fewest letters in his or her last name. This person will go and set the insulators in the yard against the building across from our room.

  8. Making Connections... • At what point would the freeze pop begin to melt? • If all of the freeze pops have melted when we open the insulators, how can we determine which insulator kept out heat the best? • We will bring the insulators inside late today. Based on today’s weather, where would heat greater-outside or inside?

  9. Let’s Take a Look at Insulator... • Where is the insulator in the picture?

  14. Let’s Take a Look at Insulator... • Where is the insulator in the picture?

  15. Make a prediction... Which would be the best insulator? • Sand • Straw • Paper • Cloth

  16. Make a prediction... Which would be the best insulator? • Air • Styrofoam • Cotton • Aluminum foil
