  2. There are many tools for understanding Isaiah Technique • Poetic style (Parallelism) • Use of symbols • Historical/Geographical background • Law of Moses Interpretation • Principles of Isaiah’s teachings • Supporting scripture • Revealed keys • The “Spirit of Prophecy” (testimony of Christ)

  3. Poetic Style • Why again is it useful to understand detailed poetic style? • Once you know the structure, you can fill in parts of the puzzle you don’t understand. • Structured poetry also guides us to the important principles

  4. Symbols • Let’s review the reasons for symbolism in teaching • Symbols have no language limitations • Often preserves truth • No limitations of spiritual maturity • Symbols deeply affect emotions and attitudes • Symbols take time

  5. Isaiah uses several types of symbols • Isaiah 1:10 • Who is the Lord actually speaking to? (1:1) • So, what is the symbol? What does it mean? • Often proper nouns are used as symbols • Places and people are not necessarily literal references • For example, Babylon often refers to wickedness in general. • Titles can be symbolic (i.e. names for Christ)

  6. Isaiah 28:23-29 • Does anyone have any idea what he’s talking about? • The people in his day did; these were cultural symbols they knew from their own lives. • Fitches? • Caraway seeds • Cummin? • Threshing? • They knew the what ittook to do this work.

  7. Isaiah 48 • v4 – “thy neck is an iron sinew” • v10 – “the furnace of affliction” • v18 – “had thy peace been as a river” • These are very visual symbols • Imagery

  8. Historical/Geographical reference • We’ll study the surrounding nations and what they are going through • Assyria • Babylon • Egypt • Sometimes the references are more local • Isaiah 10:28-32 • Only locals would know the narrow pathway that leads to Nob, right before Jerusalem

  9. The Law of Moses • Isaiah 1:2 • Recognize it? Deuteronomy 32:1 • The people who knew the law recognized it • There are many such references to the law • What similar references are in our own teachings that would be strange to outsiders? • Word of Wisdom • Articles of Faith • Endowment

Principles of Isaiah’s teaching • What do you think are some of the principles that Isaiah concentrated on? • The Plan of Salvation • Christ’s role in the plan • Basic principles and ordinances of the Gospel • Charity, Truth, Love, Sacrifice • If you’re not looking for an underlying principle, you’re missing the point.

  11. Supporting scripture/Revealed keys • Remember all of the references and quoting of Isaiah? We can use that to our advantage. • D&C 113 (one of the more obvious examples) • Continuing to the prophets today • Isaiah 2:2 Harold B Lee: “The expression ‘the mountain of the Lord’s house,’ as here indicated, was undoubtedly to be referred to as a place as well as a definition of a righteous people,”

Most importantly, however… • Again, “the Spirit of prophecy is the testimony of Christ” • We will be going through these chapters in great detail, picking them apart to find the very precise meanings. • We then have to step back, put the pieces back together and discover in faith and testimony the true message that is meant for us.

  13. Notebook Ideas • What are some meaningful symbols you use to remember important principles in your life? • What can you do to prepare yourself to be receptive to the Spirit as we study the words of Isaiah?
