  1. William Harvey(1578-1657) By Jessica Davies

  2. Brief History • Born April 1st, 1578 in Folkestone, England • Educated at the King’s College, Canterbury, then went on to study at Cambridge University • After his studies went to study medicine at the University of Padua in Italy • There he was tutored by Fabrizio • After his stay in Italy he went back to England and became a physician to James I

  3. Discovery of Blood Circulation • William Harvey’s tutor was fascinated by anatomy and knew the body’s veins consisted of one-way valves but was confused on why • Once leaving Italy he continued this research • Method of research was dissection of animals • In 1616 he revealed his findings at the College of Physicians • Published his ideas in 1628 in a book titled 'An Anatomical Study of the Motion of the Heart and of the Blood in Animals’

  4. 'An Anatomical Study of the Motion of the Heart and of the Blood in Animals’ • Contraction of heart and ventricles pump blood into aorta and pulmonary artery • Pulse is produced by the arteries being filled with blood and enlarging • Explains the process of the blood moving from the heart to the lung and to the different veins and back again to create a complete circulation • Blood in the arteries is the same as the blood in the veins

  5. 'An Anatomical Study of the Motion of the Heart and of the Blood in Animals’ (cont.) • Movements on both right and left sides of the heart are for the same purpose, to move blood • Not all blood that is sent through the arteries to the tissues is used, most travels to the veins • Most people at the time believed the blood started in the liver, but discovered it was the heart

  6. Incomplete circulation • One spot in his demonstration that was incomplete • Could not figure out how blood passes from the arteries to the veins • This was later discovered by the great anatomist Marcello Malpighi

  7. Fun Fact • First person to suggest that humans and other mammals reproduced from the fertilization of a female’s egg by a male’s sperm • Took two centuries before a mammalian egg was finally observed to be able to prove this
