  1. Computer Science (CMSC) • Focus: • studies the theory that underlies the design of computer software and the architecture of computer systems

  2. CMSC • Provides an educational foundation for careers in computer software or computer system design • Supports careers in software engineering, application software design, system programming, and system engineering

  3. CMSC Topics • Software development • Theory of programming languages • Computer organization and architecture • Theory of computation • Theory of data structures • Analysis of algorithms • Artificial intelligence

  4. CMSC Requirements • 24 semester hours in CMSC • 15 of the 24 semester hours must be in courses numbered 300 or above • Required courses • CMSC 130 - Introductory Computer Science • CMSC 150 - Introduction to Discrete Structures • CMSC 230 - Elementary Data Structures • 2 of the following 3 courses: • CSMC 311 - Computer Organization • CSMC 330 - Advanced programming Languages • CSMC 335 - Object-Oriented and Concurrent Programming

  5. CMSC Requirements (cont.) • At least 3 400-level CMSC courses • Calculus sequence totaling 6-8 credits • CMIS courses are recommended to augment this course of study with workplace-oriented topics

  6. CMSC Program Growth Student enrollments increased by 36% in 1999. The average class size increased from 22 to 25.4, which increased the number of sections by only 17%

  7. CMSC Distance Program Support

  8. CMSC Faculty • 14 currently active faculty • All faculty are full-time employed

  9. Measures of Success • Daytime at Shady Grove program initiated in alliance with Montgomery College • Two full-time faculty hired to support the Daytime program • Java used as the primary programming language

  10. Opportunities for Growth/Improvment • Explore going to WebTycho with low development cost approach • Enhance existing courses and curricula
