  2. What is a UTI? • A UTI is the presence of microorganisms in any urinary system structure.

  3. Clinical manifestations • The common S/S associated with UTI’S are Urgency , frequency, burning on urination and microscopic to gross hematuria

  4. LABS / DIAGNOSTICS • Urine culture and bacteriologic test confirm the diagnosis. • Pts with repeated UTI’s a more detailed urologic study is needed like a IVP • Microscopic inspection of urine often reveals bacteria, hematuria and pyuria

  5. Medical management • The goal is to eliminate bacteria from the urinary tract, thereby relieving symptoms, preventing damage to renal structures, and preventing the spread of infections to other body systems

  6. Nursing Interventions • Comfort measures like a regimen of anti-infective agents and urinary analgesics like…….. • Phenazopyridine ( pyridium )

  7. Pt Education includes • Teaching adequate hydration • Hygiene like perineal care • And pt education for pts that practice self-catheterization should include return demonstration to evaluate the success of maintaining clean technique • And Cranberry has been used to prevent UTI’s

  8. Prognosis • Some women suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections: • 20% of women who have had one urinary tract infection (UTI) will have one recurrence • 30% of those women will have more than one recurrence • The recurrent infection usually stems from a different strain or type of bacteria from the original urinary tract infection (UTI)
