The Dative Case • The dative case describes the indirect object which indicates to whom or for whom something is done. • Thus far you have learned the nominative case (subject and subject completion) and the accusative case (direct object). The dative case builds on these 2 utilizing the indirect object. • To refresh, here is an example of 1) nominative/accusative followed by 2) dative. Sub Verb Ind.Obj. Dir.Obj. Sub Verb Dir. Obj. Ich kaufe ein Auto. Ich kaufe meiner Frau ein Auto.

  3. The Dative Case • Let’s look at these examples a little closer: • Ich kaufe ein Auto. • Ich kaufe meiner Frau ein Auto. • I’m buying a car. • I’m buying my wife a car • OR I’m buying a car for my wife (the indirect object). • This table displays the dative articles:

  9. The Dative Case • The last slide showed examples of the indirect objects as pronouns. The same can be done for the accusative direct objects. • For example: IchkaufemeinemBruder den Pulli. • “den Pulli” as a pronoun would be “ihn” • Once the accusative direct object is referred to as a pronoun, the word order will change to: • Sub. Dir. Ob. Ind. Obj. • IchkaufeihnmeinemBruder. • If we refer to the dative indirect object as a pronoun (meinemBruder = ihm) the order will stay the same. • Ichkaufeihnihm. • NOTE: Only if accusative direct object is a pronoun will the word order change

Dative Verbs • In German, there are several verbs that only take a dative object: • antworten = to answer • danken = to thank • gehören = to belong to • gratulieren = to congratulate • helfen = to help • Warum antwortest du mir nicht? • Ich danke dir. • Das Buch gehört mir. • Ich gratuliere Ihnen, Frau Ziegler. • Kannst du mir bitte helfen?
