1. The adventures of Harry and Larry!!

   H L “We are going on a journey to visit all 35 landforms!!”
2. The first place they visited was the Cape! H L A cape is a pointed piece of land that sticks out into a sea, ocean, lake, or river. Examples: Cape Cod, Massachusetts Cape Hatteras, North Carolina Cape Coral, Florida They continued on………
3. They next decided to go to a Peninsula! A peninsula is a body of land that is surrounded by water on three sides. Gulf - A gulf is a part of the ocean (or sea) that is partly surrounded by land (it is usually larger than a bay). Ocean - An ocean is a large body of salt water that surrounds a continent. Oceans cover more the two-thirds of the Earth's surface Sea - A sea is a large body of salty water that is often connected to an ocean. A sea may be partly or completely surrounded by land. 4. Plains are flat lands that have only small changes in elevation. Examples of Plains: Black Hills – in western South Dakota Pecos Valley – in eastern New Mexico Plains are characterized by flat grasslands or rolling hills with relatively few trees. Much of the Plains in the USA is known as “Tornado Alley” The Great Plains of the United States is home of the American Bison. HEY! This place looks very plain!! That’s because it is a plain!! H L
5. Now onto…..FLOOD PLAIN! A flood plain- Land that is likely to be underwater during a flood. Notice the bends or S-shape curves in the river. These are called Meanders. Some of the world’s most important agricultural areas are found in flood plains. And they keep moving FORWARD!! We are ready for the Flood Harry!! H L
6. Deltas!! At the mouth of the river, the water slows down so much that it drops off most of its sediment! Remember all rivers eventually end up emptying into an ocean. This is called the mouth of the river! A Delta is a fan-shaped region formed by deposits of sediments found at the mouth of a river. L H Some useful Vocabulary to keep in mind! Runoff - Precipitation that flows across the land’s surface or falls into rivers and streams.  Watersheds - Area from which water is drained; region that contributes water to a river or river system. Sediment - Pieces of material carried and deposited by water or wind. Tributary - A tributary is a stream or river that flows into a larger river. **And always remember the force of gravity keeps water flowing downhill!!** A picture of the Mississippi River Delta
7. So Harry and Larry moved on to Marshes! A Marsh is a type of freshwater, brackish water or saltwater wetland that is found along rivers, pond, lakes and coasts. Marsh plants grow up out of the water. What is Brackish Water? Is water that has more salt in it than fresh water, but less than sea water. The ground in a Marsh feels like a Marshmallow! H L “Come on Harry! Let’s keep going!!.......”
8. Larry it looks like we traveled right into an OASIS!! L H L An Oasis is an isolated area of vegetation in a desert, typically surrounding a spring or similar water source. H An oasis in Warm Springs, Nevada.
9. The next Landform that Harry and Larry stumbled upon, was a Plateau A plateau is a large, flat area of land that is higher than the surrounding land. Some Vocabulary to keep in mind! Mountain - A mountain is a very tall high, natural place on Earth - higher than a hill. The tallest mountain on Earth is Mt. Everest. Hill - A hill is a raised area or mound of land. Cave - A cave is a large hole in the ground or in the side of a hill or mountain Canyon - A canyon is a deep valley with very steep sides - often carved from the Earth by a river (Grand Canyon) Cliff - A cliff is a steep face of rock and soil. 10. Valley!!! A valley is a low place between mountains. Butte What A Butte!! A butte is a flat-topped rock or hill formation with steep sides. It is taller than it is wide. L
11. Mesa A mesa A mesa is a land formation with a flat area on top and steep walls - usually occurring in dry areas. It is wider than it is tall. No, silly that was a Butte..this is a Mesa! Didn’t we just visit this place? H L
12. Both Harry and Larry were getting hot, and needed a break! Luckily they traveled upon a Reservoir! A reservoir is an artificial lake used to store water. This reservoir is in North Carolina! H Another important Vocabulary word to keep in mind! Lake - A lake is a large body of water surrounded by land on all sides. Really huge lakes are often called seas. L
13. The next Landform they stumbled on was a Glacier! A glacier is a slowly moving river of ice. Glaciers can be found in the United States in the following states: Alaska California Colorado Montana Oregon Utah Washington Wyoming BBRR!! I forgot my scarf! H L
14. Harry and Larry got tired of walking so they jumped in a plane and headed to an archipelago! An archipelago is a group or chain of islands clustered together in a sea or ocean. Hawaii would be an example of an archipelago in the United States. An island is a piece of land that is surrounded by water. A harbor is a sheltered area with water deep enough to dock boats. 15. Next their journey brought them to a beautiful waterfall! When a river falls off steeply, there is a waterfall. Little did Harry and Larry know that their adventures in Hawaii would bring them face to face with a volcano! A volcano is a mountainous vent in the Earth's crust. When a volcano erupts, it spews out lava, ashes, and hot gases from deep inside the Earth. Yikes! Kauai, Hawaii L H
16. After facing a scary volcano, both Harry and Larry hopped on a plane to Alaska! There they were met with huge ! An Iceberg is a large piece of ice from freshwater that has broken off from a snow-formed glacier or a snow shelf and is floating in open water. More vocabulary to keep in mind: Isthmus- is a narrow strip of land connecting two larger landmasses. An isthmus has water on two sides. Strait- is a narrow body of water that connects two larger bodies of water.
17. Other Vocabulary to keep in mind: Fjord- is a long, narrow sea inlet that is bordered by steep cliffs. Channel- is a body of water that connects two larger bodies of water (like the English Channel). A channel is also a part of a river or harbor that is deep enough to let ships sail through. Channel Sea Level- is the horizontal plane or level corresponding to the surface of the sea or average level.
18. And so after a very long journey Harry and Larry went home! Who knows what their next journey will be…..keep your eyes peeled!! Thanks for coming! BYE!! L H
