Anticlines. Charles Kelley ENMG 6100 Danner. The Sheep Mountain anticline in Bighorn Basin, Wyoming (part of the Rockies). Anticlines. Formed from tectonic pressure. “A” or dome shaped. When pushed together the rocks either fold upward (anticline) or fracture (fault).

  2. The Sheep Mountain anticline in Bighorn Basin, Wyoming (part of the Rockies).

  3. Anticlines • Formed from tectonic pressure. • “A” or dome shaped. • When pushed together the rocks either fold upward (anticline) or fracture (fault). • Older strata rock is located in the center. • Most anticlines are thought to be created about 70 million years ago while the Rockies where being formed.

  4. Typical Anticline

  5. Anticlinal Traps • Usually a long, oval dome with a layer of impermeable rock. • The impermeable layer blocks the upward flow of hydrocarbons. • May become a petroleum reservoir.

  6. Terminology • Anticline-Folds in the rock layers that forms an arch. • Syncline-Folds in the rock layers that forms a trough-like bend. • Monocline-Folds in rock layers that creates a slight bend.
