  7. “a-g” Subject Requirements UC vs. CSU Course Requirement Comparison The University of California and California State University have agreed to adopt the same pattern of courses; however, there will continue to be different admissions practices in some cases. Community college courses must be noted on the self-report, reference course number and where course was taken i.e. Bus 109 Intro to Business @ DVC. Documenting College Courses: For CSU document grade for 2 semesters (Fall & Spring) Business 109 Fall – B Spring –B For UC document grade only once (semester taken) If taken in fall, put grade under fall only Business 109 Fall – B Spring –

Examination Requirements (for students entering 2008) • SAT Reasoning Test or ACT for UC/CSU: UC uses highest scores in critical reading, math and writings + 2 subject tests. • CSU uses critical reading + math (writing score not included) • UC/Two Different Subject Tests - Example of subject test: English literature, foreign language, science, or social studies, math II C • Check individual school for accepted completion date of testing requirement Cal Poly prefers October – last SAT date • Send SAT scores directly from College Board for CSU use #3594 will send to all CSU’s UC send to each campus to which you apply If ACT taken, send scores: www.act.org. When scores are requested, entire testing history is sent; however, schools use best scores.

  9. Sending a Transcript? • UC/CSU applications require self report. Do not send transcripts at time of application. Schools will notify student if requesting 7th semester transcript (January). • Send AP Test Scores, transcript from high school in June and any community college work with Intent to Register. (School you have chosen to attend) • University credit is granted for Adv Placement test scores of 3 or higher For a campus by campus listing of how credit is applied see www.ucop.edu/pathways • Go to collegeboard.org for information regarding other schools & granting AP credit.

Sending a Transcript? • Grades must be maintained in the senior year or the acceptance may be rescinded. • If an academic class is dropped after the application has been submitted, the student must notify each university to which he/she has applied. • Transcript can be obtained from the Registrar for $2.00 each. Student must fill out transcript request form and provide self-addressed stamped envelope. • Transcript sent through Docufide – Order online for $7.00.

UC/CSU Grade Point Average  Calculated beginning in 10th grade in approved courses only (a-g)  Additional grade points given for grades of C or better in approved honors, Advanced Placement • Additional grade points given for UC- transferable college courses • Repeating classes – report all grades for UC system

  12. UC Personal Statement Questions • Respond to two prompts • Maximum of 1,000 words total • May respond to one prompt at greater length, shorter response not less than 250 words.

  13. UC Personal Statement Questions Prompt #1 - Describe the world you come from – for example, your family, community or school – tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. Prompt #2 – Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

  15. CSU Eligibility Index • A student meets the scholarship requirement if he or she achieves the GPA of 2.0 (minimum) and test score indicated in the eligibility index. • You will be required to meet higher admission requirements for impacted campuses and programs.

Use this formula to see if your grade point average and test scores meet the required eligibility index: SAT Scores: (GPA x 800) + your SAT Total Your high school GPA (All approved college prep “a-g” courses taken in 10th,11th and 12th grades) My index is _________ ACT Scores: (GPA x 200) = 10 x ACT Composite) Your high school GPA (All approved college prep “a-g” courses taken in 10th, 11th and 12th grades) My index is _________ *The CSU will not include the SAT or ACT writing scores in the Eligibility Index for 2007-08 admissions decision. California residents must have a minimum index of 2900 using SAT scores or 694 using ACT scores. Non-California residents must have a minimum index of 3502 using SAT scores or 842 using ACT scores.   17. CSU Eligibility Index • Eligibility does not mean admission – must be competitive • Check specific campuses for impacted majors and programs

CSU Entry Level Math (ELM)English Placement Test (EPT) • Exception through STAR test or SAT score of 550 or better in math and critical reading • Math exception may also be achieved in successful completion of senior level math class beyond Algebra 2 • Non-Exempt students will be required to take placement test in Spring on a CSU campus

Transcripts and Self Report • UC/CSU require self report at time of application • Obtain unofficial transcript from Career Center for reference • How to read transcript for UC/CSU: All “a – g” courses will need to be reported for application purposes. However, only “a-g” courses taken in 10 - 11 grade will be computed for UC/CSU GPA. • The estimated UC/CSU GPA can be found on the transcript: CP Weighted. Each campus may compute a different GPA. • Courses with a P in front of them denote college prep and H denotes honors credit.These are the only courses to be reported. • Each university may take only a certain number of H courses.

  21. Eligibility in the Local Contextfor the UC • The top four percent of students at each participating California high school are designated UC-eligible. UC has identified ELC students and assigned an ELC number. • SRVHS ELC students have already been notified and a file has been started by the UC system. • Students must still complete Subject and Examination Requirements • ELC information available at www.ucop.edu/sas/elc

  22. Application Cycle • UC Fall filing period is between November 1 – 30. May go online Oct 1, but can not submit before Nov 1. • CSU October 1 – November 30 • CSU Cal Poly Early Decision Oct 31 Deadline DO NOT WAIT UNTIL NOVEMBER 30 TO APPLY • Students should keep each campus informed of any changes in information reported on application. • Check at time of application for housing recommendation • Students must respond to all inquiries for information from each campus.

Application Cycle, cont’d • Each campus reviews applications in a comprehensive manner. • Fee UC $60 each campus, CSU $55 each campus • Most admission decisions for freshmen are sent out between March 1 and March 30. CSU may be earlier. • Many campuses have online access to admissions decisions. • Students must submit their intent to register (to one campus only) by May 1. • Request final transcript from Registrar by graduation date.

Applying to Private Institutions • GPA, test scores, extracurricular, essays, recommendations, strength of program, interview • Obtain application online or request paper from school • Common application available for many schools • Check for supplemental application • Web Site www.commonapp.org • Check application deadlines and testing requirements • Early Action/Early Decision

Applying to Private Institutions • Secondary School reports and Letters of Recommendation Provide counselor with: Resume, Parent Brag Sheet (in Career Center) • Provide self-addressed stamped envelope • Request transcripts from registrar ($2.00 each) or Docufide $7.00 • Send test scores from College Board, ACT • Provide additional stamped envelope along withmid-year report. Give mid-year report to counselor in Dec.

  26. Applying to Private Institutions Be mindful regarding Thanksgiving and winter break. Counselors and registrar will not be able to process letters of recommendation or transcripts after December 17th, if needed for January 1st deadline.

  27. Community College • Eligible if 18 years of age or high school diploma • Apply in spring of senior year • Check if housing is available • Check assessment dates for specific colleges • Math and English Assessment for DVC done at SRVHS in March • Do not need SAT or ACT
