Scientific Question How can we identify different areas of the tongue where different taste buds are located?
HYPOTHESIS WHAT IF WE TASTE SOMETHING SWEET,SOUR,SALTY,OR BITTER, THEN WE CAN WE IDENTIFY WHICH PART OF THE TONGUE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DOING THAT?
Background When food enters the mouth,it mixes with saliva. This mixture activates the taste buds in the tongue, setting off a chemical reaction that we call “taste”
Background These taste budscan be found on the tongue in large numbers.taste buds are also found on the roof of the mouth, and in the throat.
How to locate your taste buds • Stick your tongue out in front of a mirror and look for many little white bumps called papillae. • The taste buds are found at the bottom of the papillae.

Materials • Three small cups • Cotton swabs • Tap water or bottled water • Three pairs of latex or rubber gloves • 12 copies of the tongue map • Pen or pencil
Materials cont. • Dilute salt solution • Dilute sugar solution • Dilute vinegar solution • Dilute white horseradish solution • 12 test tubes • Test tube rack
Procedure • Place four test tubes in the test tube rack. The tubes should be labeled salt.sugar, vinegar and horseradish • Prepare a tongue diagram for each subject tested.Write the subjects name.age, and gender
Procedure Cont’d • Rinse mouth with bottled or tap water. • Place a small amount of each of the four liquids on various areas of the tongue.
