The Church in the Modern World “The joy and hope, the grief and anguish of the people of our time, especially those who are poor or afflicted in any way, are the joy and hope, the grief and anguish of the followers of Christ as well. Nothing that is genuinely human fails to find an echo in their hearts.” (1)

  3. Body of Christ in Action • Catholics are • Transformed by Christ in the liturgy. • Called to bring Christ’s saving presence to the world.

  4. Overarching Principles in Specific Situations • Catholic Social Teaching – Church teaching which examines human society in light of Scripture and Tradition to help guide Christians in continuing Christ’s mission in the world. • Bridge which applies timeless Truth of Scripture & Tradition to new and complex social situations • Takes into account religious, political, cultural, and economic factors that shape society.

  5. Types of Church Documents • Constitutions • Text from a council, written for the whole world • Highest authority • Encyclicals • Letter from the Pope to the Bishops and others • High authority • Pastoral letters • Letter from a Bishop or group of Bishops • Addressed to a specific location

  6. Changes in society • Enlightenment • Reason and science alone are the basis for knowing truth • Industrial Revolution • Shift from farming and craft trade economy to one based on factory production

Two worldviews • Liberal Capitalism • Individuals are free to participate in a free market to buy and sell goods. • Marxism (Socialism, Communism) • Based on class conflict: • poor would rise up and overthrow the capitalist class • abolish private property • distribute wealth according to need • Atheistic

RerumNovarum(The Condidtion of Labor) • Pope Leo XIII - 1891 • Taught a middle ground between two worldviews based on Gospel, Tradition, and Natural Law • Established a precedent for Church to speak on social matters • Moral choices affect society, and society affects individual moral choices • Call to change way society is set up to eliminate the root of problems.
